Fish Oil
Fish oil is derived from the tissues of oily fish such as anchovies, sardines, and menhaden. It is a concentrated source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are not abundant in typical equine diets based on forage and cereal grains. These long-chain omega-3 fatty acids are more biologically potent than shorter-chain omega-3s, such as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) found in plant-based sources like flaxseed.
In equine nutrition, fish oil is included in feed and supplement formulations to increase dietary omega-3 intake, often to help balance the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio in high-grain or high-oil diets. These fatty acids play roles in modulating inflammatory responses and supporting various physiological functions. Due to its strong flavor and odor, fish oil may affect palatability and is typically used in small quantities.
