L-Tryptophan

L-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid required for protein synthesis and various metabolic functions in horses. It serves as a precursor for serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation and nervous system function. Due to this role, L-Tryptophan is sometimes included in equine supplements marketed for calming or stress support. However, its effectiveness as a calming agent in horses has not been scientifically proven, and serotonin synthesis is a complex process influenced by multiple factors beyond dietary tryptophan intake.

Horses obtain L-Tryptophan naturally from protein-containing feedstuffs such as forages and grains. While dietary supplementation may be used in specific situations, such as for horses prone to stress or nervous behavior, research does not conclusively support its calming effects.

The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain L-Tryptophan as an ingredient.
