Manganese Methionine Complex

Manganese methionine complex is an organic trace mineral compound in which manganese is chelated, or bound, to the amino acid methionine. This chelation enhances the bioavailability of manganese, allowing for improved absorption and utilization in the horse’s body compared to inorganic manganese sources such as manganese oxide or manganese sulfate.

In equine nutrition, manganese is an essential trace mineral involved in bone development, cartilage formation, and enzyme activation. It plays a critical role in joint health, antioxidant function, and carbohydrate metabolism. The methionine-bound form provides a more stable and absorbable source of manganese, reducing the risk of interactions with other minerals that could limit its availability. While manganese deficiency is uncommon in horses, supplementation is often required in areas with low manganese levels in their forages.
