Molasses

Molasses is a thick, viscous byproduct of sugar extraction from sugarcane or sugar beets. It is commonly used in livestock and equine diets as a palatable energy source and a binder for pelleted feeds. Rich in sugars, primarily sucrose, glucose, and fructose, molasses provides a quick source of digestible carbohydrates. It also contains small amounts of minerals such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium.

Molasses is produced during the refining of sugar, where the juice extracted from sugarcane or sugar beets is boiled multiple times to crystallize sugar. The remaining liquid, after most of the sugar has been removed, is molasses. It can be fed in liquid form or dried and processed into a powdered or pelleted feed ingredient.

In horse nutrition, molasses is often included in commercial feeds to enhance taste and encourage feed intake. However, its high sugar content makes it unsuitable to be in high levels for horses with metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance or equine metabolic syndrome.
