Omega 6 Fatty Acids

Omega-6 fatty acids are a class of polyunsaturated fats that contribute to cellular function, immune response, and energy metabolism in horses. They are essential fatty acids, meaning they must be obtained through the diet as the horse’s body cannot synthesize them. The primary omega-6 fatty acids found in equine nutrition include linoleic acid (LA) and arachidonic acid (AA).

Common sources of omega-6 fatty acids in horse feeds include vegetable oils such as soybean oil, corn oil, and sunflower oil, as well as grains like oats and corn. These fatty acids provide a concentrated source of energy and support skin and coat health. However, maintaining a balanced ratio between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids is important to regulate inflammatory and anti-inflammatory signaling in the body. An imbalance favoring omega-6s may contribute to excessive inflammation.
