Retinyl acetate is a synthetic form of vitamin A, a fat-soluble vitamin essential for vision, immune function, reproduction, and skin and tissue health in horses. It is a stable and commonly used source of vitamin A in fortified feeds and supplements.

In equine nutrition, vitamin A supports normal growth, cell function, and the maintenance of healthy mucous membranes. Horses typically obtain vitamin A from fresh forages in the form of beta-carotene, which is converted into active vitamin A in the body. However, stored hay loses vitamin A content over time, making supplementation with retinyl acetate beneficial for horses with limited access to fresh pasture. Because vitamin A is stored in the liver, excessive supplementation can lead to toxicity, so levels should be carefully balanced in the diet.
