Wheat Middlings (Shorts)
Wheat middlings, also known as wheat shorts or wheat millrun, are a byproduct of wheat milling. They consist of fine particles of bran, germ, and endosperm that are separated during the production of refined flour. The composition of wheat middlings can vary depending on the milling process, but they generally contain a mixture of fiber, protein, and residual starch. This makes them a valuable feed ingredient for livestock, including horses.
In equine nutrition, wheat middlings serve as a good source of energy and protein while also contributing to fiber intake. They are often included in pelleted horse feeds as a binding agent due to their fine consistency. The final starch content of wheat middlings can vary significantly depending on the thoroughness of the milling process. However, they contain substantially less starch than the original whole grain.
