Streptococcus zooepidemicus and Streptococcus equi evolution: the role of CRISPRs. The host-restricted bacterium Streptococcus equi is the causative agent of equine strangles, the most frequently diagnosed infectious disease of horses worldwide. The disease is characterized by abscessation of the lymph nodes of the head and neck, leading to significant welfare and economic cost. S. equi is believed to have evolved from an ancestral strain of Streptococcus zooepidemicus, an opportunistic pathogen of horses and other animals. Comparison of the genome of S. equi strain 4047 with those of S. zooepidemicus identified examples of gene loss due to mutation and deletion, and gene ga...
Latherin and other biocompatible surfactant proteins. Horses and other equids are unusual in producing protein-rich sweat for thermoregulation, a major component of which is latherin, a highly surface-active, non-glycosylated protein that is a member of the PLUNC (palate, lung and nasal epithelium clone) family. Latherin produces a significant reduction in water surface tension at low concentrations (≤1 mg/ml), and probably acts as a wetting agent to facilitate evaporative cooling through a thick, waterproofed pelt. Latherin binds temporarily to hydrophobic surfaces, and so may also have a disruptive effect on microbial biofilms. It may conseq...
Studies on glycoprotein-derived carbohydrates. This research focuses on the study of glycoproteins, specifically investigating their carbohydrate chains and their various functions in living organisms. The article highlights the challenges in isolating specific carbohydrate chains […]
Biotransformation of 5(10)-estrene-3 alpha,17 beta-diol by equine testicular preparations in vitro. The research investigates the biosynthesis of a particular isomer called 5(10)-estrene-3 alpha, 17 beta-diol in stallion testes and how it affects the formation of 19-nor steroids and oestrogens. Summary of […]
