Unusual presentation of cyathostomiasis in an adult Thoroughbred mare. A recently purchased 16-year-old Thoroughbred mare with a history of recurrent colic and low body weight, also had lameness in 3 limbs, pain at the sacro-iliac joint, and increased corneal opacity of the right eye. Response to supportive therapy was poor and euthanasia was elected. A postmortem examination and histopathology confirmed cyathostomiasis within the large colon and cecum and chronic anterior uveitis of the right eye. Surgical removal of a gastric trichophytobezoar in a foal. This report describes a rare case of gastric impaction caused by a trichophytobezoar in a foal. Prevalence of obesity in the equine population of Saskatoon and surrounding area. A retrospective study determined the prevalence of obesity and over-conditioning in horses in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Body condition score (BSC) was assessed for 290 horses from the Field Service practice at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. The median BSC of horses was 6; however, 59 (20.3%) horses were classified as over-conditioned, and 24 (8.3%) as obese. Atlanto-axial malformation in an adult Quarter horse gelding. An adult gelding was evaluated for bilateral intermittent forelimb lameness of approximately 2 years duration. Cecal entrapment within the epiploic foramen in a mare. An 11-year-old Thoroughbred mare with colic unresponsive to medical treatment underwent exploratory laparotomy. During surgery the cecum was found entrapped within the epiploic foramen from left to right. The entrapped cecum was reduced through the foramen by gentle traction. There is a need for evidence-based scientific research to address the question of the effectiveness of acupuncture in improving clinical signs of laminitis in horses. The objectives of this study were to determine the demographics of horses with equine recurrent uveitis (ERU) presenting to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and to describe and compare the prognosis of ERU in the Appaloosa with that in other breeds. Internal fixation of fractured ribs in neonatal foals with nylon cable tie using a modified technique. Nylon cable tie has been shown to be an effective and economical method for fixing fractured ribs in the neonatal foal. This article describes a modification of the previously described technique. Under general anesthesia, the fractured ribs were exposed and a hole was drilled in the dorsal and ventral fragments. The fracture was not reduced, leaving the fragments overriding each other. Complications and risk factors of castration with primary wound closure: Retrospective study in 159 horses. Castration with primary wound closure reportedly has lower complication rates and shorter recovery periods compared to castration with second intention healing. However, little is known about risk factors associated with complications using primary wound closure. Medical records of 159 horses castrated and having primary wound closure were reviewed. Idiopathic glaucoma in an 11-year-old crossbred mare. An 11-year-old crossbred mare was presented with left eye buphthalmia, a mydriatic minimally responsive pupil, locally extensive ventral corneal edema, and corneal striae. Frontal and caudal maxillary sinus lipoma in a horse. An adult horse was diagnosed with a frontal and caudal maxillary sinus lipoma, which was surgically removed. Femoral head ostectomy and medial patellar ligament desmotomy to treat a pregnant miniature horse with coxofemoral joint luxation and upward fixation of the patella. A 2-year-old, 8-weeks pregnant, non-weight bearing miniature horse mare was treated for a 6-day-old left coxofemoral joint luxation with a femoral head ostectomy. Necrotizing hepatitis associated with Clostridium novyi in a pony in western Canada. Severe icterus, peritoneal effusion, localized fibrinous peritonitis, and necrotizing hepatitis were found at necropsy of a 20-year-old female pony with a history of acute onset depression, inappetence, fever, and marked elevation in hepatic enzymes. Gross pathology, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry were compatible with a diagnosis of clostridial hepatitis caused by Clostridium novyi-group bacteria. Treatment of chronic sinusitis in a horse with systemic and intra-sinus antimicrobials. A 12-year-old Norwegian Fjord gelding was diagnosed with paranasal sinusitis as a post-operative complication of tooth repulsion surgery. The infection with inspissated purulent material persisted despite sinus trephination and lavage, and systemic antimicrobial therapy. Repair of an acquired diaphragmatic hernia with surgical mesh in a foal. A foal born with assisted delivery developed rib fractures and a diaphragmatic hernia. The main objective of this retrospective study was to describe clinical findings, management, and short- and long-term outcome in 27 horses that underwent various surgical techniques for esophageal disease. Congenital nutritional myodegeneration in a neonatal foal. A 2-day-old Quarter Horse colt was presented to the Atlantic Veterinary College for recumbency and diarrhea. Dietary history of the dam, serum biochemistry findings, and whole blood selenium levels were consistent with nutritional myodegeneration. Peritoneal fluid immunocytochemistry used for the diagnosis of a possible case of equine gastrointestinal B-cell lymphoma. After physical examination, ultrasonographic evaluation of thorax and abdomen, and peritoneal fluid analysis, gastrointestinal neoplasia with suspected diffuse peritoneal metastasis was diagnosed in a 17-year-old Arabian gelding.
