Large-scale study of blood markers in equine atypical myopathy reveals subclinical poisoning and advances in diagnostic and prognostic criteria. Equine atypical myopathy (AM) is a severe rhabdomyolysis syndrome primarily caused by hypoglycin A (HGA) and methylenecyclopropylglycine protoxins. This study aimed to refine diagnostic and prognostic criteria for AM while exploring apparently healthy cograzers. Disruption of sphingolipid metabolism and induction of equine leukoencephalomalacia by Fusarium proliferatum culture material containing fumonisin B(2) or B(3). Fumonisin B(1), B(2), and B(3) are inhibitors of ceramide synthase, a key enzyme in the pathway for de novo sphingolipid biosynthesis.
