In women, ovarian hormone loss at menopause has been related to cognitive decline, and some studies suggest that estrogen-containing hormone therapy (HT) can mitigate these effects. Elevated plasma testosterone concentrations during stallion-like sexual behavior in mares (Equus caballus). Mounting interactions in mares isolated from stallions and the relationship to stage of the estrous cycle and level of circulating hormones were studied for 3 years in a herd averaging 105 mares. Mares were assigned to mounting, standing, and control groups. A control mare was selected by being within 1 day of the number of days after ovulation in a mounting mare. Sexual behavior of mares. The mare is seasonally polyestrus, having an anovulatory period during the short light days of late fall and early winter, and beginning to ovulate as the days become longer during the winter. Assessment of the sexual behavior of pregnant mares. Pregnant mares (N = 12) were observed with a stallion from early gestation until parturition for sexual behavior. Observations were conducted for 20 min per day for 5 days each month from September until July. No mares exhibited full estrus and no intromissions or ejaculations occurred at any time during the study. Social interactions such as male approach and female/female mutual grooming occurred with greater mean frequency or duration in some months of spring and fall than in winter months.
