Growth hormone (GH) secretory pattern and GH response to GH-releasing factor (GRF) or thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) in newborn foals.
Journal of developmental physiology    April 1, 1993   Volume 19, Issue 4 143-147
Davicco MJ, Coxam V, Faulconnier Y, Dubroeucq H, Martin-Rosset W, Barlet JP.The present study was undertaken to assess GH secretory profiles in 12 light-breed foals and their dams during forty days after delivery, and the possible influence of GRF and TRH on plasma GH concentrations in these newborn foals. GH secretory pattern was pulsatile in one day- as well as in forty days-old foals. The number of secretory spikes (10 per 24 h) did not vary between days 1 and 40. In the same times, GH secretion did not show any circadian rhythm either in foals or in their dams. Mean daily plasma concentrations (measured through blood samples collected every 20 min for 24 h) were l...
The development of gluconeogenic enzymes in the liver and kidney of fetal and newborn foals.
Journal of developmental physiology    September 1, 1992   Volume 18, Issue 3 137-142
Fowden AL, Mijovic J, Ousey JC, McGladdery A, Silver M.The activities of glucose-6-phosphatase (G6P), fructose diphosphatase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), aspartate and alanine transferases were measured in liver and kidney of fetal foals between 100-318 days of gestation (term approximately 335 days) and during the immediate postnatal period (0-48 h after birth). All 5 enzymes could be detected in the fetal liver and kidney at the youngest gestational age studied. Mean fetal activities were lower than those observed in their mothers and showed no change with gestational age for the majority of enzymes studied. However, renal PEPCK a...
The distribution of ventilation-perfusion ratios in the lungs of newborn foals.
Journal of developmental physiology    August 1, 1987   Volume 9, Issue 4 309-324
Stewart JH, Young IH, Rose RJ, Costas L, Barko AM.The distributions of ventilation-perfusion ratios, and the effects of 100% oxygen administration on the distributions, were studied in 3 foals from 4h to 9 days of age, using the multiple inert gas elimination technique. The distributions were calculated from the pulmonary clearance of 6 inert gases following infusion into a peripheral vein of a solution containing the inert gases. The results from a total of 8 studies showed several consistent features. The major findings were (i) the absence of low ventilation-perfusion ratios, i.e. regions where blood flow was greatly in excess of ventilati...
Development of the adrenal cortex in the fetal foal: an ultrastructural study.
Journal of developmental physiology    February 1, 1981   Volume 3, Issue 1 59-73
Webb PD, Steven DH.The adrenal cortex from twelve fetal foals (gestational ages from 61 to 300 days) was examined by light and electron microscopy. Adrenal glands from three newborn foals were also examined by light microscopy. Between 61 and 100 days of gestation the adrenal cortex became organised into two distinct regions, the zona glomerulosa and zona fasciculata, which grew steadily in thickness until the 300th day. Between 300 days and birth there was a dramatic increase in the width of the zona fasciculata. From 200 days a narrow band of compact cells marked the cortico-medullary border. Though these cell...
