Critical anthelmintic trials in ponies with four benzimidazoles: mebendazole, cambendazole, fenbendazole, and albendazole. The comparative efficacy of four benzimidazoles against gastrointestinal parasites of ponies was evaluated by the critical test method. Mebendazole (8.8 mg/kg), cambendazole (20 mg/kg), fenbendazole (5 mg/kg), and albendazole (2.5 and 5 mg/kg) given in single oral doses were highly effective against adult large strongylids (Strongylus vulgaris, S. endentatus, S. equinus) and adult small strongylids (genera identified in order of frequency: Cylicostephanus, Cylicocyclus, Cyathostomum, Triodontophorus, Poteriostomum, Oesophagodontus, Cylicodontophorus, Gyalocephalus, and Craterostomum). Sarcocystis fayeri sp. n. from the horse. Hearts, diaphragms, esophagi, and spinal cords from 266 horses were obtained at slaughter in Creston, Ohio. Tissues were examined microscopically for Sarcocystis in sections, digested in trypsin to obtain bradyzoites, and fed to 10 dogs and 10 cats. Intramuscular cysts were found in selections of two hearts from 57 horses and four esophagi from 107 horses. The cysts were up to 900 micron long and up to 70 micron wide. Thelazia lacrymalis in horses in Kentucky and observations on the face fly (Musca autumnalis) as a probable intermediate host. Eyes from 114 (30.3%) of 376 dead horses, examined from 3 April 1975 to 3 April 1976, were naturally infected with adult Thelazia lacrymalis; 1 horse was also infected with 1 male Thelazia skrijabini. Adult T. lacrymalis from dead horses were successfully transferred mechanically to the eyes of 3 of 4 Shetland ponies raised helminth-free. Studies on the development and chemotherapy of larvae of Parascaris equorum (Nematoda: Ascaridoidea) in experimentally and naturally infected foals. Experimentally induced infections of Parascaris equorum in worm-free pony foals required 14 to 17 days for migration of the larvae through the liver and lungs, and 79 to 110 days to become gametogenically functional. Experimental infection of Strongyloides westeri in parasite-free ponies. ABSTRACT: The prepatent period of Strongyloideswesteri experimentalinfection in ponies was 6 to 10 days in pony foals and 11 to 13 days in pony yearlings. The infection stimulated moderate inflamma- tion in the anterior one-third of the small intestine in pony foals. Pony yearlings and Quarter Horse foals lost the infection and were resistantto reinfection. The loss of infection was associated with a neutrophiliain QuarterHorse foals and an increase in p-globulin in pony yearlings.
Klossiella equi Baumann, 1946 (Sporozoa: Eucoccidia: Adeleina) from equids. Kidneys from 5 of 40 ponies (Equus caballus) and from 3 of 14 burrows (Equus asinus) were found infected with Klossiella equi. In addition to previously reported sporogonous stages in epithelial cells of Henle's loop, schizogonic stages in endothelial cells of Bowman's capsule and epithelial cells of the proximal convoluted tubules are described.
