Factors determining the digestive efficiency of the domesticated donkey (Equus asinus asinus). Factors determining the digestive efficiency of donkeys were studied in animals fed either a low quality roughage (wheat straw: 77.1% neutral detergent fibre, 2.8% crude protein) or a high quality forage (alfalfa hay: 47.5% neutral detergent fibre, 22.7% crude protein). The neutral detergent fibre (NDF) intake when fed wheat straw was 1693 +/- 268 g animal-1 day-1, 10% higher than when fed alfalfa hay. Changes in blood flow distribution in equine lungs induced by anaesthesia. The distribution of blood flow to the lungs was measured with labelled microspheres injected into horses before and during anaesthesia. Anaesthesia was induced with glycerol guaiacolate ether and ketamine, and maintained with the spontaneous breathing of halothane in oxygen. In a preliminary group of six horses, flow distribution was observed during anaesthesia in sternal, dorsal and right lateral recumbency. The blood rheology of man and various animal species. A comparative study has been made of the blood rheology, and its component factors, in horse, sheep, cattle, goat, camel, pig, dog, rabbit and man. The erythrocyte flexibility of horse red cells is high relative to man, that of pig, dog, camel and rabbit comparable, but less flexible, and sheep, cattle and goat relatively inflexible. Bilirubin excretion following feeding or the infusion of glucose in ponies. Bile flow, during feeding and fasting, was studied in three ponies in which catheters, maintained in the bile duct over 1-2 months, drained all bile continuously. During experiments bile was returned to the small intestine, via a second catheter, by means of a small pump which also measured bile flow rates.
