[New drugs for horses and production animals in 2011].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    October 19, 2012   Volume 40, Issue 5 301-308
Emmerich IU.In 2011, three newly developed active pharmaceutical ingredients for horses and food producing animals were released on the German market for veterinary drug products. Two of these new products represent different drug classes of antibiotics, the polypeptide antibiotic Bacitracin (Bacivet™) and the macrolide antibiotic Clorsulon (Levatum®). The third product represents an anticestodal antiparasitic (Tildipirosin, Zuprevo®). Furthermore, three established veterinary active pharmaceutical ingredients were modified to allow their application for additional species. Thus the nonsteroidal anti-...
[Successful treatment of an equine sarcoid. Case report on a combined surgical and photodynamic therapy].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    October 19, 2012   Volume 40, Issue 5 309-313
Reschke C.The case report describes the surgical and photodynamic treatment (PDT) of an equine sarcoid in a 6-year-old gelding. A mass on the ventral prepuce, several tumours on the lateral aspect of the prepuce and one sarcoid on the front aspect of the chest were treated. For PDT, Temoporfin (Fospeg® Biolitec AG, Jena) at a concentration of 0.15mg/ml was injected locally. The subsequent irradiation was performed using a red-light laser (652nm) with an energy density of 10J/cm². The mass on the ventral aspect of the prepuce and some of the lateral tumours displayed total remission. The remaining tumo...
[Seasonal and national differences in the selenium supply of horses across Europe].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    June 13, 2012   Volume 40, Issue 3 157-166
Müller A, Bertram A, Moschos A.Evaluation of the differences in the selenium supply to horses across Europe. Methods: Serum samples from 137,152 horses all over Europe, which had been sent by veterinarians to IDEXX Vet Med Labor between January 1st 2006 and December 31st 2011, were routinely analyzed for the selenium concentration by means of ICP-analytic. Results: The selenium content of the soil appears to play a key role in the selenium supply to horses. Countries closer to the ocean provided a better selenium supply than countries in central Europe. The best selenium supply can be seen in Denmark and in the Netherlands....
[Influence of the amount of concentrate feeding on concentrate intake and development of body weight and growth parameters of suckling foals from birth until the 6th month of life].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    June 13, 2012   Volume 40, Issue 3 150-156
Mack JK, Remler HP, Senckenberg E, Kienzle E.The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of a different energy supply on the development of Warmblood foals with a focus on examining the recommended allowances of the German Society for Nutrition Physiology. Methods: Two groups of foals received different amounts of concentrates from the 1st until the 6th month of life. With regards to the total energy content, the rations were composed to either comply with the recommendations (6) (group "Norm", n=15) or to exceed those by approximately 20% (group "Zulage", n=16). The supply with concentrates of the group "Norm" aimed for a...

Recknagel S, Nicke M, Schusser GF.To evaluate the diagnostic value of peritoneal fluid (PF) cytology for clinical diagnosis of abdominal neoplasia in horses. Methods: Ten horses with histopathologically confirmed abdominal neoplasia, in which a PF analysis was performed, were included in this retrospective study. PF was analyzed for total protein concentration and a nucleated cell count was performed. Using cytological criteria of malignancy, the PF samples were evaluated regarding their probability of malignancy. Results: Cytologic classification of cells according to criteria of malignancy allowed a positive cytologic diagno...
[Effect of distribution of eggs of strongyles and Parascaris equorum in faecal samples of horses on detection with a combined sedimentation-flotation method].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    February 15, 2012   Volume 40, Issue 1 21-26
Kuhnert-Paul Y, Schmäschke R, Daugschies A.Results of parasitological examination of faecal aliquots may vary between diagnostic laboratories. To examine whether inhomogeneous distribution of worm eggs in faecal samples is responsible for this observation, horse faeces provided for routine diagnosis of helminth infection were examined. Distribution of worm eggs was assessed by examining aliquots taken from different locations of the faecal sample by a combined sedimentation-flotation method (KSFV). In addition, it was tested, whether the homogenization of a larger amount (minimum of 40 g) of faeces before performing KSFV improved repro...

Two substances have been approved for additional species. The tetracycline antibiotic doxycycline is now also authorized for turkeys and the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug firocoxib from the group of cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors is now avai...
Comparison of eosin-thiazin and Papanicolaou-Shorr staining for endometrial cytologies of broodmares. Technical Note.
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    December 15, 2011   Volume 39, Issue 6 358-362
Walter J, Klein C, Wehrend A.Exfoliative endometrial cytology is an easy and valuable diagnostic tool for the detection of inflammatory processes of the uterus that correlates well to culture results. The practical use of this procedure is limited due to the time-consuming Papanicolaou-Shorr staining technique. In this study the suitability of the rapid eosin-thiazin staining for endometrial smears was investigated. Methods: Sample collection was carried out with a guarded culture swab (Knudsen-catheter) in 27 broodmares during routine gynaecological examination. Two smears were prepared from each collection. One was stai...
[Regenerative therapy for tendon and ligament disorders in horses. Terminology, production, biologic potential and in vitro effects].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    December 15, 2011   Volume 39, Issue 6 373-383
Geburek F, Stadler P.Conventional treatments of equine tendon injuries lead to an unsatisfactory healing process that usually results in a relatively high recurrence rate. Therefore, in recent years so-called regenerative therapeutics were studied scientifically in vitro and in laboratory animals. These include substances that ideally lead to the formation of replacement tissue, which in contrast to the low quality scar, has similar functional properties as the original intact tendon. Currently, a plethora of different substrates is either commercially available or can be produced in practice with the help of kits...
[Pyrrolizidine alkaloids and seneciosis in farm animals. Part 2: clinical signs, species-specific sensitivity, food residues, feed contamination, limit values].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    December 15, 2011   Volume 39, Issue 6 363-372
Petzinger E.At the forefront of pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) poisoning is the chronic ingestion of contaminated hay, which causes liver damage resulting in an ongoing fatal liver cirrhosis or in the veno-occlusive disease in liver or lung, respectively. The symptomatology of PA-poisoning is not identical for all animal species, and also includes central nervous symptoms. In affected horses significantly elevated levels of hepatogenic serum enzymes and an increase of the retention time for bromosulfophthalein indicates the fatal outcome of the intoxication. Chronic seneciosis of horses is incurable. Rabbits...

[Growth of the hoof horn in horses with chronic laminitis].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    December 6, 2011   Volume 39, Issue 3 163-170
Hertsch B, Teschner D.Objective of the study was to investigate whether a correlation between rotation and/or sinking of the third phalanx (P3) and changes of horn growth on the hoof wall exists. Methods: In 117 hooves of euthanatized or slaughtered horses with chronic laminitis the rotating angle to palmar/plantar and medial/lateral and a sinking of P3 were assessed on radiographs. Defined distances were measured on the dorsal hoof wall as well as in the heel to assess the horn growth of a hoof. On the basis of saw cuts of the hooves, the course of the horn tubes was judged. Results: A rotation angle of approximat...
Comparison of three methods of sampling for endometrial cytology in the mare. Preliminary study.
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    December 6, 2011   Volume 39, Issue 3 171-175
Defontis M, Vaillancourt D, Grand FX.This prospective study aims to compare three different sampling techniques for the collection of endometrial cytological specimens in the mare: the guarded culture swab, the uterine cytobrush and the low volume uterine flush. Methods: The study population consisted of six healthy Standardbred mares in dioestrus. In each mare an acute endometritis was induced by performing a low- volume uterine flush 6days after ovulation using a sterile isotonic solution (lactated Ringer's solution or ViGroâ„¢ Complete Flush Solution). Two days after initiating inflammation, samples were collected from each ma...
[Pyrrolizidine alkaloids and seneciosis in farm animals. Part 1: occurrence, chemistry and toxicology].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    December 6, 2011   Volume 39, Issue 4 221-230
Petzinger E.Pyrrolizidine alkaloids belong to a class of phytotoxins which are present in more than 6000 plant species. The disease seneciosis in farm animals represents the severe poisoning by pyrrolizidine alkaloids from plants of the genus Senecio. This form of poisoning has been known since the end of the 19th century in Germany, the USA, Canada and New Zealand, and is mainly caused by Senecio jacobaea and related Senecio spp. in farm animals, including poultry. Animal poisoning by pyrrolizidine alkaloids is of worldwide importance. In Germany poisoning of horses and cattle by Senecio jacobaea, which ...

Every group of horses was continuously observed following the pie chart system for 24 hours. Results: The "walk-through" station signifi...
[Diagnosis, therapy and endocrinologic parameters of persistent follicles in mares in comparison with preovulatory follicles].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    June 29, 1999   Volume 27, Issue 3 180-186
Kaiser B, Koene M, Swagemakers J, Bader H, Hoppen HO.During the 1997 breeding season persistent follicles were diagnosed in 17 mares. In 16 of these mares a total of 17 follicles were transabdominally punctured and the steroids oestradiol, progesterone and testosterone were measured in the follicular fluid and in blood serum. In ten mares serving as a control group preovulatory follicles were punctured. The follicular fluid of the persistent follicles revealed a very high variability of the steroid concentrations. Depending on the steroid ratio within the follicles, eight follicles were rated as being intact, three follicles were undergoing atre...

[Radiologic examination of the spine in “back problems” of the standing horse].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    May 18, 1999   Volume 27, Issue 2 122-127
Ranner W, Schill W, Gerhards H.The radiological examination of the thoracolumbar spine of a horse with a potential back problem is most important in order to come to a diagnosis and the imaging method of choice. The use of parallel grid-cassettes, appropriate films, rare earth screens and aluminium filters requires radiographic equipment with an output of 60-120 kV and 25-90 mAs. By use of this technique in the standing horse it is possible to obtain radiographs of the summits of the dorsal spinal processes of the thoracolumbar spine from the first thoracic (T1) to approximately the third of fourth lumbar vertebrae (L3/4). ...

[Veterinary recommendations for the handling of equine virus arteritis (EVA) in practical breeding care].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    March 17, 1999   Volume 27, Issue 1 61-66
Klug E, Sieme H.The equine virus arteritis (EVA) consistently epidemically varying throughout the different breeds of the horse breeding countries is up to now only of lower significance by means of the typical clinical manifestation as well as an abortion causing factor. The susceptibility of the sexual mature stallions against the equine arteritis virus (EAV) causes different infection response which may lead to some restrictions in their use in natural breeding especially in the artificial insemination. In a certain not precisely predictable part of the stallion population EAV infection will cause a transi...
[Effect of the administration of PGF2 alpha synchronously with insemination on the pregnancy rate in mares in an insemination program].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    March 17, 1999   Volume 27, Issue 1 54-60
Bader H, Röhrsheim C, Koene M, Meinecke B.Investigations in different species including the horse have demonstrated that prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) is involved in initiating uterine contractions occurring during mating and artificial insemination (A.I.). Uterine contractions play an important role with respect to the sperm transport within the female genital tract. The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate whether the administration of PGF2 alpha (Dinoprost) synchronously to A.I. could have a positive effect on the pregnancy rate in mares. A field study including 346 warmblood-mares (age two to 20 years) belo...
[Follicular dynamics after treatment with hCG for ovulation induction in mares].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    March 17, 1999   Volume 27, Issue 1 47-51
Bollwein H, Braun J.In this study the use of hCG for induction of ovulation is described. Factors such as follicle diameter at the time of administration of hCG (3000 IE hCG i.v.), follicular growth after hCG and the rate of double ovulations were evaluated. A total of 168 mares presented for artificial insemination were used. In 249 estrous periods hCG was given to mares exhibiting standing estrous when a minimum follicle diameter of 30 mm and a well developed edema of the endometrium could be detected by ultrasonography. In nine estrous periods ovulation occurred within 24 hours after hCG. The majority of mares...
