The Veterinary record    February 12, 2008   Volume 162, Issue 6 177-180 doi: 10.1136/vr.162.6.177
Getachew AM, Innocent GT, Trawford AF, Feseha G, Reid SJ, Love S.A cross-sectional coprological survey in the regions of Ada, Akaki, Bereh and Boset, and a retrospective postmortem investigation were conducted to study the epidemiology of Parascaris equorum in donkeys and horses in Ethiopia. Faecal samples from 803 working donkeys and 402 horses were collected, and the numbers of worms recovered from 112 donkeys examined postmortem between 1995 and 2004 were analysed. There was a high prevalence of infection and faecal egg output of P equorum in both donkeys and horses, and the severity of the infection in donkeys was increased irrespective of their age. Th...

The Veterinary record    January 29, 2008   Volume 162, Issue 4 116-119 doi: 10.1136/vr.162.4.116
Vos NJ, Pollock PJ, Harty M, Brennan T, de Blaauw S, McAllister H.Four horses and one pony, ranging in age from one to 11 years, were diagnosed with two different types of odontoid peg fractures. Their clinical signs included reluctance to move the neck and head, dullness, and abnormalities of gait. Radiography was essential for the diagnosis, and the method of treatment varied depending on the severity of the neurological signs, the intended use of the horse, and financial constraints. Optimal treatment requires a technique that allows decompression, anatomical alignment, and stabilisation of the odontoid fracture. If the clinical (neurological) signs are n...

Serological changes observed in horses infected with Anoplocephala perfoliata after treatment with praziquantel and natural reinfection.
The Veterinary record    January 15, 2008   Volume 162, Issue 2 50-53 doi: 10.1136/vr.162.2.50
Abbott JB, Mellor DJ, Barrett EJ, Proudman CJ, Love S.The serological changes in two groups of horses known to be harbouring Anoplocephala perfoliata were studied; 12 were treated with 1.5 mg/kg praziquantel and 200 microg/kg ivermectin, and 14 were treated with 200 microg/kg ivermectin. Serological and faecal analyses were carried out on each animal at intervals for 758 days. The titres of antibodies specific for A perfoliata decreased from the day of treatment to day 28 in both groups, and continued to decrease in the group treated with praziquantel and ivermectin, with the first significant decrease from the other group at day 121. From day 15...
Actinomyces species as a cause of abscesses in nine horses.
The Veterinary record    January 8, 2008   Volume 162, Issue 1 18-20 doi: 10.1136/vr.162.1.18
Fielding CL, Magdesian KG, Morgan RA, Ruby RE, Sprayberry KA.The characteristics, history, clinical signs, treatment and outcome of nine horses with abscesses caused by Actinomyces species were reviewed. dna sequencing was used to determine the species of one of the isolates. The horses were one to 11 years of age, and the abscesses were most commonly located in the submandibular and retropharyngeal regions. The bacterium was usually cultured as the sole isolate and the horses were most often affected in the autumn. Most of the abscesses were treated with antimicrobials and drainage, but some of them recurred. The horses with submandibular abscesses had...

Prevalence of Setaria equina microfilaraemia in horses in Hungary.
The Veterinary record    December 18, 2007   Volume 161, Issue 24 814-816
Hornok S, Genchi C, Bazzocchi C, Fok E, Farkas R.Peripheral blood samples were collected randomly from 195 horses in various parts of Hungary, and the presence of microfilariae was evaluated by the Knott technique. On the basis of morphological identification 18 of the horses (9.2 per cent) were infected with Setaria equina, and the infection was confirmed in 10 animals by pcr and sequencing. The level of microfilaraemia was between 1 and 1138 larvae in 2 ml of blood. There was no correlation between the time of sampling or the sex of the animals (stallions versus mares) and the prevalence of infection, but the prevalence decreased with age....
Myonecrosis in three horses with colic: evidence for endotoxic injury.
The Veterinary record    December 11, 2007   Volume 161, Issue 23 786-789
Valentine BA, Löhr CV.Three horses with colic, clinical evidence of endotoxaemia and high serum activities of creatine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase were examined postmortem. The horses were diagnosed with severe ulcerative colitis, pyloric ulceration and stenosis with colonic sand impaction, and colonic obstruction due to faecaliths. There was no gross or histological evidence of muscle trauma. Their semimembranosus muscles had scattered acute to subacute segmental necrosis of the myofibres, suggestive of endotoxin-induced muscle injury.
Evaluation of foot pain in the standing horse by magnetic resonance imaging.
The Veterinary record    December 7, 2007   Volume 161, Issue 22 739-744 doi: 10.1136/vr.161.22.739
Sherlock CE, Kinns J, Mair TS.The records of 41 horses with previously undiagnosed foot pain that had been examined by standing magnetic resonance imaging were reviewed and follow-up information was obtained from their owners two years after the examination. A range of soft tissue and osseous abnormalities were identified, with multiple lesions frequently occurring. Deep digital flexor tendonitis was recorded in 12 of the horses, and distension of the distal interphalangeal joint was identified in 15, but it was not always associated with lameness; in contrast, distension of the navicular bursa was always associated with l...
Comparison of five real-time PCR assays for detecting virulence genes in isolates of Escherichia coli from septicaemic neonatal foals.
The Veterinary record    November 27, 2007   Volume 161, Issue 21 716-718 doi: 10.1136/vr.161.21.716
Mapes S, Rhodes DM, Wilson WD, Leutenegger CM, Pusterla N.Fifty-five isolates of Escherichia coli from septicaemic neonatal foals were used to validate five real-time pcr assays targeting different known virulence factor genes: curli fibre (csgD), ferric hydroxamate uptake (fhuA), type 1A pilin (fimA), aerobactin (lutA) and yersiniabactin (fyuA). A pcr assay targeting a universal sequence of the bacterial 16S rrna gene served as quality control. The pcr assays showed good analytical specificity and sensitivity on the basis of sequencing the pcr products, their lack of cross-reactivity with non-E coli organisms, high amplification efficiency and a lim...

Diagnosis of equine infectious anaemia during the 2006 outbreak in Ireland.
The Veterinary record    November 13, 2007   Volume 161, Issue 19 647-652 doi: 10.1136/vr.161.19.647
Cullinane A, Quinlivan M, Nelly M, Patterson H, Kenna R, Garvey M, Gildea S, Lyons P, Flynn M, Galvin P, Neylon M, Jankowska K.In 2006 there was an outbreak of equine infectious anaemia (EIA) in Ireland. This paper describes the use of the diagnosis of clinical and subclinical cases of the disease. In acute cases the ELISAs and the immunoblot were more sensitive than the AGID. In one mare, fluctuating antibody levels were observed in all the serological assays before it seroconverted by AGID. Viral RNA and DNA were detected by RT-PCR and PCR in all the tissues from the infected animals examined postmortem. The PCR detected viral DNA in plasma regardless of the stage of the disease. In contrast, the RT-PCR detected RNA...

The Veterinary record    November 6, 2007   Volume 161, Issue 18 611-616 doi: 10.1136/vr.161.18.611
Labens R, Mellor DJ, Voûte LC.Osteoarthritis of the distal tarsal joints, affecting the centrodistal and tarsometatarsal joints, is a common cause of hindlimb lameness in horses. This paper describes the outcome of the intra-articular treatment of 51 horses with the condition with either methylprednisolone acetate (mpa) or triamcinolone acetonide (tr), either with or without hyaluronic acid (ha). The outcome was assessed in terms of the changes in the horses' grade of lameness. Follow-up information was obtained from the owners by means of a telephone questionnaire. Horses treated once with mpa or tr, either with or withou...
