Outbreak of equine herpesvirus type 1 myeloencephalitis: new insights from virus identification by PCR and the application of an EHV-1-specific antibody detection ELISA.
The Veterinary record    October 30, 2003   Volume 153, Issue 14 417-423 doi: 10.1136/vr.153.14.417
Studdert MJ, Hartley CA, Dynon K, Sandy JR, Slocombe RF, Charles JA, Milne ME, Clarke AF, El-Hage C.Five of 10 pregnant, lactating mares, each with a foal at foot, developed neurological disease. Three of them became recumbent, developed complications and were euthanased; of the two that survived, one aborted an equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1)-positive fetus 68 days after the first signs were observed in the index case and the other gave birth to a healthy foal on day 283 but remained ataxic and incontinent. The diagnosis of EHV-1 myeloencephalitis was supported by postmortem findings, PCR identification of the virus and by serological tests with an EHV-1-specific ELISA. At the time of the...
Ophthalmic lesions in 83 geriatric horses and ponies.
The Veterinary record    October 1, 2003   Volume 153, Issue 11 319-322 doi: 10.1136/vr.153.11.319
Chandler KJ, Billson FM, Mellor DJ.Ophthalmic lesions were detected in 67 of 83 horses and ponies aged 15 years or more. Degeneration of the vitreous, followed by senile retinopathy, were the most common lesions and both of them became more common with advancing age, although few of the owners reported disturbances of vision in their animals.

The Veterinary record    August 16, 2003   Volume 153, Issue 4 118-121 doi: 10.1136/vr.153.4.118
Pusterla N, Watson JL, Affolter VK, Magdesian KG, Wilson WD, Carlson GP.The medical records of 53 horses with purpura haemorrhagica were reviewed. Seventeen of them had been exposed to or infected with Streptococcus equi, nine had been infected with Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, five had been vaccinated with S. equi M protein, five had had a respiratory infection of unknown aetiology, and two had open wounds; the other 15 cases had no history of recent viral or bacterial infection. The horses were between six months and 19 years of age (mean 8.4 years). The predominant clinical signs were well demarcated subcutaneous oedema of all four limbs and haemorrhages...
Efficacy of montelukast in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in five horses.
The Veterinary record    July 17, 2003   Volume 152, Issue 26 804-806 doi: 10.1136/vr.152.26.804
Kolm G, Zappe H, Schmid R, Riedelberger K, Van den Hoven R.Five horses with moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were treated with 0.11 (0.01) mg/kg bodyweight of montelukast, a cysteinyl leukotriene receptor antagonist, once a day for 26 days. The horses were evaluated clinically and endoscopically and subjected to arterial blood gas analysis and lung function tests before and after the period of treatment, and the plasma concentrations of montelukast were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. The treatment did not result in statistically significant differences in the total score...

Epidemiological study of Culicoides hypersensitivity in horses in Israel.
The Veterinary record    July 2, 2003   Volume 152, Issue 24 748-751 doi: 10.1136/vr.152.24.748
Steinman A, Peer G, Klement E.The variations with breed, gender, age and coat colour in the prevalence of Culicoides hypersensitivity were studied in 408 horses on 18 farms in Israel. Data were gathered by means of questionnaires and the diagnoses were confirmed by direct physical examinations. The prevalence of Culicoides hypersensitivity was 28 per cent. The disease was rare on farms more than 800 m above sea level but was more prevalent at lower altitudes. The most important factors affecting the prevalence of Culicoides hypersensitivity were the farm, breed and age, but gender and colour were not significantly correlat...

Treatment of gastric ulceration in 10 standardbred racehorses with a pectin-lecithin complex.
The Veterinary record    June 14, 2003   Volume 152, Issue 22 679-681 doi: 10.1136/vr.152.22.679
Ferrucci F, Zucca E, Croci C, Di Fabio V, Ferro E.The severity of the erosive and ulcerative lesions of the squamous gastric mucosa in 10 standardbred racehorses in training was classified according to a standard scoring system. Each horse was then treated orally for 30 days with 50 g/100 kg bodyweight daily of a pectin-lecithin complex mixed into the feed. At the end of the period of treatment, the gastric lesions were re-evaluated gastroscopically and the scores were compared with those assigned at the previous evaluation. In three of the horses the gastric ulcerations had healed completely, and in six others the lesions had improved signif...

Aid to the antemortem diagnosis of Fell pony foal syndrome by the analysis of B lymphocytes.
The Veterinary record    June 7, 2003   Volume 152, Issue 20 618-621 doi: 10.1136/vr.152.20.618
Thomas GW, Bell SC, Phythian C, Taylor P, Knottenbelt DC, Carter SD.Fell pony foals are affected by a congenital fatal immunodeficiency that commonly leads to anaemia and lymphopenia. Previous work has shown that the foals' circulating subpopulations of CD4 and CD8 T lymphocytes are unaffected. In this study it was shown that the mean population of B lymphocytes in 10 affected foals was less than 10 per cent of that in normal foals.

Multifocal eosinophilic enteritis associated with a small intestinal obstruction in a standardbred horse.
The Veterinary record    June 7, 2003   Volume 152, Issue 21 648-651 doi: 10.1136/vr.152.21.648
Swain JM, Licka T, Rhind SM, Hudson NP.A seven-year-old standardbred gelding developed marked signs of colic associated with an acute small intestinal obstruction. Surgical exploration revealed three intramural, circumferential constricting lesions in the small intestine, the two most severe of which were in the jejunum and were resected. The horse was euthanased owing to postoperative complications. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of idiopathic multifocal eosinophilic enteritis.

Case-control study to investigate risk factors for horse falls in hurdle racing in England and Wales.
The Veterinary record    May 24, 2003   Volume 152, Issue 19 583-587 doi: 10.1136/vr.152.19.583
Pinchbeck GL, Clegg PD, Proudman CJ, Morgan KL, French NP.Between March 1, 2000 and August 31, 2001, a case-control study was conducted on 12 racecourses in England and Wales to identify and quantify the risk factors associated with horse falls in hurdle races. The cases and controls were defined so that variables relating to the horse, the jockey, the race and racecourse, and the jump could be considered. The cases were defined as a jumping effort at a hurdle flight that resulted in a fall, and the controls were defined as a successful jump over a hurdle at any of the 12 racecourses within 14 days before or after the case fall. Conditional logistic ...
Study of the effect of Bronchipret on the lung function of five Austrian saddle horses suffering recurrent airway obstruction (heaves).
The Veterinary record    May 20, 2003   Volume 152, Issue 18 555-557 doi: 10.1136/vr.152.18.555
van den Hoven R, Zappe H, Zitterl-Eglseer K, Jugl M, Franz C.The effects of an oral preparation containing an extract of thyme and primula (Bronchipret; Bionorica) on the lung function of five horses suffering heaves were determined in a longitudinal study. The horses accepted the product well. The plasma concentrations of the marker substance, thymol, indicated that at least one of the substances in the extract had been absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The compliance, pulmonary pressure and airway resistance of the horses' lungs were all significantly improved after one month of treatment However, the severity of their clinical signs and their...
Influence of detomidine and buprenorphine on motor-evoked potentials in horses.
The Veterinary record    May 13, 2003   Volume 152, Issue 17 534-537 doi: 10.1136/vr.152.17.534
Nollet H, Van Ham L, Gasthuys F, Dewulf J, Vanderstraeten G, Deprez P.Horses need to be sedated before they are investigated by transcranial magnetic stimulation because of the mild discomfort induced by the evoked muscle contraction and the noise of stimulation. This paper describes the influence of a combination of detomidine (10 microg/kg bodyweight) and a low dose of buprenorphine (2.4 microg/kg) on the onset latency and peak-to-peak amplitude of magnetic motor-evoked potentials in normal horses. There were no significant differences between measurements of these parameters made before the horses were sedated and measurements made 10 and 30 minutes after the...

Measurement of tidal breathing flow-volume loop indices in horses used for different sporting purposes with and without recurrent airway obstruction.
The Veterinary record    March 26, 2003   Volume 152, Issue 10 288-292 doi: 10.1136/vr.152.10.288
Herholz C, Straub R, Braendlin C, Imhof A, Lüthi S, Busato A.Tidal breathing flow-volume loop (TBFVL) indices in healthy horses and in horses suffering from mild and moderate to severe recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) were measured. In addition, the ability of these indices to differentiate healthy controls from horses with mild RAO by separating the horses according to their usage was investigated. The horses were assigned to three sporting categories: 1 Leisure horses; 2 Horses competing at events with a duration of more than five minutes (eventing, coaching and endurance); and 3 Horses competing at events with a duration of less than five minutes (...
