Vestibular signs associated with suspected lightning strike in two horses.
The Veterinary record    November 16, 2001   Volume 149, Issue 17 519-522 doi: 10.1136/vr.149.17.519
Bedenice D, Hoffman AM, Parrott B, McDonnel J.Two previously healthy 14-year-old horses developed right-sided unilateral vestibular signs after they had possibly been struck by lightning. Repeated radiographic and endoscopic evaluations did not reveal any significant changes. A brainstem auditory evoked response test indicated a subtle left to right interaural latency difference of waves I, III and V in the more severely affected pony, but its central conduction time remained normal.

Measurement of basal serum insulin concentration in the diagnosis of Cushing’s disease in ponies.
The Veterinary record    November 2, 2001   Volume 149, Issue 15 449-452 doi: 10.1136/vr.149.15.449
Reeves HJ, Lees R, McGowan CM.A high basal plasma or serum insulin concentration is commonly accepted as an indicator of Cushing's disease in horses. The results of the combined dexamethasone suppression test and thyrotropin-releasing hormone stimulation test were compared with the basal insulin concentrations and insulin response tests of eight hyperinsulinaemic and insulin-resistant ponies with clinical histories of chronic or recurrent laminitis that were suspected of having Cushing's disease. Seven of the eight ponies had normal responses to the combined test indicating that basal insulin concentrations are not a speci...

Sentinel practice-based survey of the management and health of horses in northern Britain.
The Veterinary record    October 27, 2001   Volume 149, Issue 14 417-423 doi: 10.1136/vr.149.14.417
Mellor DJ, Love S, Walker R, Gettinby G, Reid SW.Details of the management, feeding, level of activity and routine health care of horses in Scotland and the five northernmost counties in England were recorded through a stratified random sample of horse owners who had responded to a previous survey. Sixty-eight per cent of the horses were kept where their owners resided, and 32 per cent were kept away from the owner's home. More than 99 per cent were turned out to grazing for at least part of the year and 81 per cent were stabled for at least part of the time, most commonly bedded on straw (50 per cent) or shavings (34 per cent). Hay was fed ...

Epidemiology of equine grass sickness: a literature review (1909-1999).
The Veterinary record    September 26, 2001   Volume 149, Issue 10 293-300 doi: 10.1136/vr.149.10.293
McCarthy HE, Proudman CJ, French NP.The geographical spread of grass sickness between 1909 and 1999, particularly in England and Wales, is described, and the experimental investigations to identify a causal agent are summarised. The epidemiological techniques used to investigate grass sickness vary from clinical observations, to more advanced methods such as case-control studies using logistic regression analyses. Several risk factors for grass sickness have been reported consistently (age, time of year and recent movement to new pasture or premises) and several others have been reported for which the findings remain inconsisten...

Suspected protozoal myeloencephalitis in a two-month-old colt.
The Veterinary record    September 18, 2001   Volume 149, Issue 9 269-273 doi: 10.1136/vr.149.9.269
Gray LC, Magdesian KG, Sturges BK, Madigan JE.A two-month-old Appaloosa colt developed neurological signs shortly after birth involving deficits affecting cranial nerves IV, VII, VIII, IX, X and XII, and possibly nerve VI. The most likely differential diagnoses were congenital anomalies, meningoencephalitides, trauma or nutritional causes. The foal was investigated by the analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), electromyelography (EMG), brain auditory evoked responses, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), peripheral nerve biopsy, and Western blot analysis for the presence of intrathecal antibodies to Sarcocystis neurona, the causative agent o...

Renal hypoplasia and dysplasia in an American miniature foal.
The Veterinary record    September 11, 2001   Volume 149, Issue 7 199-203 doi: 10.1136/vr.149.7.199
Gull T, Schmitz DG, Bahr A, Read WK, Walker M.Diagnostic imaging, including computed tomography, of a two-month-old foal with renal failure indicated that its right kidney was probably absent and that its left kidney was abnormal in shape. The foal was stabilised and released, but three days later its clinical signs recurred. Postmortem examination revealed renal hypoplasia and dysplasia, the first reported case of this condition in an American miniature horse.

Comparison of thiopentone/guaifenesin, ketamine/guaifenesin and ketamine/midazolam for the induction of horses to be anaesthetised with isoflurane.
The Veterinary record    August 24, 2001   Volume 149, Issue 5 147-151 doi: 10.1136/vr.149.5.147
Gangl M, Grulke S, Detilleux J, Caudron I, Serteyn D.Forty-eight horses subjected to elective surgery were randomly assigned to three groups of 16 horses. After premedication with 0.1 mg/kg acepromazine intramuscularly and 0.6 mg/kg xylazine intravenously, anaesthesia was induced either with 2 g thiopentone in 500 ml of a 10 per cent guaifenesin solution, given intravenously at a dose of 1 ml/kg (group TG), or with 100 mg/kg guaifenesin and 2.2 mg/kg ketamine given intravenously (group KG), or with 0.06 mg/kg midazolam, and 2.2 mg/kg ketamine given intravenously (group KM). Anaesthesia was maintained with isoflurane. The mean (sd) end tidal isof...
