Photosensitization in horses is a condition characterized by an increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight, often resulting in inflammation and damage. This condition can occur due to the presence of photodynamic agents in the skin, which may be either ingested or produced internally. Common sources of these agents include certain plants, medications, or liver dysfunction that leads to the accumulation of phylloerythrin, a breakdown product of chlorophyll. Wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa)-induced photosensitization. Wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) has been associated with livestock and human photosensitization. An investigation of a natural occurrence of photosensitization of grazing horses identified wild parsnip as a possible cause. HPLC-MS and MS/MS analysis of this plant identified five furanocoumarins i.e., xanthotoxin, bergapten, isopimpinellin, imperatorin and a putative methoxyimperatorin. An apparently gluten-induced photosensitivity in horses. Primary photosensitization was observed in 3 Appaloosa mares. The skin lesions were diffuse erythema followed by edema and subsequently weeping and finally dry gangrene and ulceration. The severe photosensitivity dermatitis was apparently induced by gluten ingestion. Resolution of lesions occurred after withdrawal of the suspected dairy concentrate feed and prevention of exposure to sunlight. Grasses have relatively few intrinsic toxins, relying more on growth habit to survive defoliation and endophytic fungal toxins as chemical defenses.
