Renin is an enzyme secreted by the kidneys in horses, playing an integral role in the regulation of blood pressure and electrolyte balance. Behavior of renin angiotensin aldosterone axis during pulling exercises in euhydrated and dehydrated horses. The influence of hydration prior to exercise on hormonal response to exercise was investigated in horses, divided into two groups, control (n=11) and dehydrated (n=53). They were also classified according to their body weight in A (≈ 350 kg), B (351-450 kg) and C (≈ 451 kg). Alterations in plasma volume, plasma constituents, renin activity and aldosterone induced by maximal exercise in the horse. Plasma volume (PV) decreased by 13 per cent following the completion of 1,000 m of maximal exercise in the horse. This study demonstrated that the critical reduction in PV following maximal exercise occurred within 10 mins of completion of exercise, as previously reported in man. Total plasma protein (TPP) increased by 23 per cent at 2 and 5 mins, and by 21 per cent at 10 mins post exercise. Plasma volume, electrolyte, and endocrine changes during onset of laminitis hypertension in horses. Acute laminitis-hypertension was produced by carbohydrate overloading of the gastrointestinal tract in 12 adult horses. Obel grade 3 (OG3) lameness developed 40 hours (+/- 3.5, SEM) after overfeeding. At OG3 lameness, mean plasma volume was significantly decreased (P less than 0.005) when compared with base-line values. Renin, aldosterone and cortisol in the thoroughbred horse. To assess the renin-aldosterone system in a large mammal, simultaneous morning activities of plasma renin and concentrations of aldosterone and cortisol were measured in 25 thoroughbred horses. Renin was relatively low in all horses (0.16 +/- 0.02 (S.E.M.) ng angiotensin I/ml per h), levels of aldosterone in plasma were 527 +/- 130 pmol/1 and levels of cortisol in plasma were 141 +/- 11 nmol/l. Effect of exercise, phenylbutazone, and furosemide on the plasma renin activity and angiotensin I in horses. Circulating concentrations of angiotensin I and plasma renin activity (PRA) were determined in 45 Thoroughbreds before prerace medication (at rest), 1 to 1 1/2 hours before racing but after prerace medication (prerace), within 15 minutes after racing (immediately postrace), and between 1 to 2 hours after racing.
