Advances in equine practice management.

Abstract: As equine practices move forward in the 21st century, we feel increasing pressure to manage our businesses like business people. This requires outside expertise, in-house business-trained managers, and continuing education on various aspects of practice life. Aside from the AAEP, several other organizations are providing continuing education in management, including the Association of Veterinary Practice Managers, the Veterinary Management Institute offered at Purdue University Krannert Graduate School of Management, the American Animal Hospital Association through (The Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine's) on-line practice management course, and the University of Illinois Equine Practice Management modules.

The research article discusses the growing need for business management principles within equine veterinary practices, highlighting the importance of expertise, training, and continuous education. Several institutions offering such management education are also introduced.

Increased Need for Business Management in Equine Practice

  • The research emphasizes the increasing need for business acumen in the field of equine practices. As the profession moves forward in the 21st century, practitioners are required to view and run their clinics more like businesses rather than just healthcare providers. There is an increased pressure to deliver quality veterinary services while also ensuring profitability, growth, and sustainability of the practice.
  • This requirement for business management in equine practice necessitates bringing in outside expertise, having in-house managers with business training, and continuous personal and institutional upskilling in various aspects of practice management. Different areas of management, including finance, operations, human resources, and marketing, among others, start playing a crucial role in determining the success of an equine practice.

Role of Training and Continuing Education

  • The study also recognizes the importance of continuous education in successful practice management. As the field is constantly evolving, it is essential that practitioners stay updated with the latest trends, best practices, and advancement in both veterinary science and business management.
  • This need has led to the rise of various institutions and organizations offering specialized courses in veterinary practice management. Through these courses, practitioners can receive training and education on management aspects pertinent to running a successful equine practice.

Organizations Providing Management Education

  • The paper highlights several institutions and organizations that are currently providing continuous education in veterinary practice management. These include the Association of Veterinary Practice Managers (AVPM), the Veterinary Management Institute at Purdue University Krannert Graduate School of Management, the American Animal Hospital Association’s (AAHA) online practice management course offered through The Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, and the University of Illinois Equine Practice Management modules.
  • Such courses, by combining veterinary knowledge and business management, prepare practitioners to competently face and overcome business-related challenges in their practice, thereby ensuring better service delivery and sustainable growth.
