Aneurysmal bone cyst in the horse.
Abstract: An aneurysmal bone cyst was diagnosed in the distal metaphysis of Mt3 in a 9-month-old-Quarter Horse colt. The lesion developed between the fifth and ninth month of life and clinically appeared as a non-painful swelling which did not cause a lameness. Radiographs of the lesion showed expansion of the cortex and incomplete septa of new bone extending from the cortex into surrounding soft tissue. Surgical intervention revealed a blood filled cavity. The animal died during the immediate post-surgical period. Histopathologic evaluation of the lesion was performed.

This research article focuses on a study where a rare bone condition known as an aneurysmal bone cyst was diagnosed and analyzed in a 9-month-old Quarter Horse colt. The study further examines the symptoms, diagnosis, and outcome of the surgical intervention on the horse which unfortunately resulted in the animal’s death.
Research Context
- The study offers a detailed analysis of a rare case where an aneurysmal bone cyst was found in a young Quarter Horse colt. An aneurysmal bone cyst is a non-cancerous but potentially destructive bone lesion that typically occurs in humans and rarely in animals.
- The case study involved a 9-month-old colt where the lesion developed between the fifth and ninth months of life. This condition is rare, particularly in such a young animal. The visible symptom of the cyst was non-painful swelling but it was not causing any lameness in the horse.
Diagnostic Findings
- Radiographs (or x-rays) were taken of the lesion and they revealed expansion of the cortex (the outer part of the bone). There were also incomplete sections of new bone extending from the cortex into the surrounding soft tissues.
- Such diagnostic findings on radiographs are symptomatically typical of an aneurysmal bone cyst, where the cystic lesion filled with blood causes expansion and deformation of the bone. The incomplete sections of the new bone suggest compensatory but incomplete bone healing.
Surgical Intervention and Outcome
- A surgical intervention was performed on the colt with the intention to remove the cystic lesion. Upon surgery, it was revealed that the cavity within the bone was filled with blood, a characteristic feature of an aneurysmal bone cyst.
- Unfortunately, the horse did not survive the immediate post-surgical period. The exact cause of death is not detailed in this abstract, but it illustrates the potential complications and risks associated with surgical intervention in such cases.
Histopathologic Evaluation
- The researchers performed a histopathologic evaluation of the bone lesion. Histopathology is the examination of tissues under the microscope and it provides essential information about the nature and origin of diseases.
- The outcomes of this evaluation are not included in the abstract. However, the histological study would provide valuable insights about the cellular structure and pathological changes within the aneurysmal bone cyst.
The observations and findings from this case study provide crucial insights into the rare manifestation of aneurysmal bone cysts in horses, as well the diagnostic and surgical challenges associated with this condition.
