[Ascites as a result of peritoneal mesotheliomas in a horse].
Abstract: An abdominal tumor was suspected after clinical evaluation in an eight-year-old, bay-coloured hannoveranian gelding. The diagnosis was based on the symptoms of ascites, on the results of the transcutaneous abdominal ultrasound examination and on the characteristic changes in the serum-electrophoresis. Postmortem a peritoneal mesothelioma was diagnosed. This primary tumor of the peritoneum is rarely described in horses.

The research focuses on a case study of an eight-year-old horse diagnosed with an abdominal tumor, which was later identified as a peritoneal mesothelioma, a rare condition in horses characterized by symptoms of ascites.
Case Description and Diagnosis
- The research presents clinical findings of an eight-year-old hannoveranian gelding that was suspected to have an abdominal tumor. The presumption was based largely on the symptom of ascites, which is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity often associated with serious diseases.
- Diagnosis was done through a transcutaneous abdominal ultrasound examination and evaluation of changes in the serum-electrophoresis, a laboratory procedure that separates proteins based on their size and electrical charge. These tests helped confirm the presence and nature of the abdominal tumor.
Post-Mortem Analysis
- The gelding unfortunately passed away, and a post-mortem examination was conducted. The insightful autopsy allowed researchers to accurately diagnose the nature of the tumor.
- After the horse’s death, it was conclusively determined that it had peritoneal mesothelioma. This is a rare type of tumor that originates from the mesothelial cells lining the peritoneum, the extensive serous membrane that forms the lining of the abdominal cavity.
Significance of the Findings
- The case study is unique since peritoneal mesothelioma is rarely reported in horses, thereby contributing to the scant body of veterinary literature on this subject.
- This study emphasizes the importance of thorough clinical evaluations and the use of diagnostic tools like ultrasound and serum-electrophoresis in arriving at accurate diagnoses, particularly for rare conditions.
- The researchers hope that sharing this information will alert vets of such possible cases and help them in diagnosing and managing similar conditions in the future.
