Assessment of the application for renewal of authorisation of Levucell SC (Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077) as a feed additive for lambs and horses.

Abstract: Levucell SC is the trade name for a feed additive based on viable cells of a strain . The product is currently authorised for use in feed for horses, lambs, dairy sheep and dairy goats, dairy cows and cattle for fattening. This opinion concerns the renewal of the authorisation of Levucell SC as a zootechnical additive for lambs and horses. is considered by EFSA to be suitable for the qualified presumption of safety (QPS) approach to establishing safety for the target species, consumers and the environment. The identity of the strain present in the additive was established. Accordingly, this strain is presumed safe for the target species, consumers of products from animals fed the additive and the environment. Since no concerns are expected from other components of the additive, Levucell SC is also considered safe for the target species, consumers of products from animals fed the additive and the environment. The applicant has provided data demonstrating that the additive currently in the market complies with the conditions of authorisation. Furthermore, according to the information provided in the technical dossier, no new evidence has been identified that would make the FEEDAP Panel reconsider the previous conclusions on the safety of the product for target species, consumers, users and the environment under the authorised conditions of use. Levucell SC is an eye irritant.

Summary

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.

The research article discusses the renewal of authorisation for the use of Levucell SC, a feed additive for lambs and horses, and reviews its safety for the animals, consumers and the environment. No new safety concerns were found compared to earlier data.

Levucell SC and Its Current Use

  • The study examines Levucell SC, a feed additive that derives from a viable strain . The product is commercially used, authorised for including in feed for several species, including horses, lambs, dairy sheep and goats, as well as dairy cows and cattle for fattening.
  • The focus of this specific article is the idea of renewing the authorisation of Levucell SC, particularly as a zootechnical additive for lambs and horses.

Assessment by EFSA and Safety of Levucell SC

  • The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recognises this strain as suitable for the qualified presumption of safety (QPS) approach, which is a technique used for establishing safety for the target animal species, consumers, and environment.
  • The study confirms the identification of the strain in the additive, which leads to the presumption that the strain is safe for the aimed animal species, consumers who ingest products from animals fed with this additive and the environment.
  • It was also concluded that, aside from the strain, no concerns are anticipated from other components of Levucell SC, affirming the product’s safety for the aimed species, human consumers, and the environment.

Compliance with Authorisation Conditions and Potential Concerns

  • The applicant presented data showing that the additive, as it currently exists on the market, complies with the conditions of its authorisation.
  • The technical dossier didn’t present any new evidence that would make the FEEDAP Panel reconsider their previous conclusions on the safety of the product for target species, consumers, users, and the environment, provided that it is used under the authorised conditions.
  • The study points out that Levucell SC does present an irritating effect on the eye.
