Atypical salmonellosis in horses: fever and depression without diarrhea.
Abstract: Salmonellosis in horses may result in fever, anorexia, and depression without concurrent diarrhea or other obvious gastrointestinal abnormalities and should be considered in cases of fever of unknown origin. The syndrome also is characterized by neutropenia, usually with a left shift, and growth of small numbers of salmonella from feces cultured in selenite enrichment broth. Repeated culturing may be necessary to isolate the organism. All six affected horses of this report recovered in 3 to 7 days without specific therapy.

This research article presents a study on atypical salmonellosis in horses, a condition characterized by symptoms such as fever, loss of appetite, and low mood, without any evident gastrointestinal problems. The disease, which is caused by a Salmonella bacteria infection, was observed to recover in 3 to 7 days without any kind of specific treatment.
Identification and Diagnosis
- The authors noted that atypical salmonellosis in horses may lead to symptoms such as fever, anorexia (loss of appetite), and depression. Nonetheless, unlike typical cases of salmonellosis, this condition did not cause diarrhea or any other easily identifiable gastrointestinal issues.
- The researchers suggested this condition should be considered when dealing with cases of fever of unknown origin in horses. The disease was found to be characterized by neutropenia, a condition characterized by low levels of a type of white blood cell known as neutrophils, usually with a left shift.
Diagnostic Procedures
- The Salmonella bacteria responsible for the condition were isolated from horses’ feces cultured in selenite enrichment broth. However, since only small numbers of the Salmonella bacteria were grown, repeated culturing may be necessary to isolate the bacteria effectively and confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment and Recovery
- The study reported that all of the six affected horses were observed to recover from atypical salmonellosis within 3 to 7 days, without any kind of specific therapy or treatment. The authors did not detail any other measures taken to manage the horses’ symptoms or speed up their recovery.
Research Conclusion
- The scientists concluded that it’s important to consider atypical salmonellosis in horses when dealing with cases of unexplained fever. Despite the unusual lack of diarrhea or other gastrointestinal abnormalities typically associated with salmonellosis, the presence of fever and depression serves as a crucial clue in identifying this condition. Furthermore, the relatively quick, spontaneous recovery of the horses serves as another unique characteristic of atypical salmonellosis.
