Cardiac disease in the geriatric horse.

Abstract: Almost all equine cardiac diseases may affect the geriatric horse. This article focuses on those cardiac diseases that are most common in the older horse, including degenerative valve disease, aortocardiac fistula, and congestive heart failure. Other cardiac diseases, such as bacterial endocarditis, pericarditis, and arrhythmias, are seen in all age groups of horses and are beyond the scope of this article.

Summary

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.

The research article discusses the various heart diseases commonly found in elderly horses, which include degenerative valve disease, aortocardiac fistula, and congestive heart failure. It does not address cardiac conditions like bacterial endocarditis, pericarditis, and arrhythmias, which occur in horses of all ages.

Introduction

  • The paper concentrates on cardiac diseases that commonly afflict older horses. These diseases can have severe implications for the health and well-being of the horses.
  • Heart diseases in horses are significant health problems that lead to decreased performance, serious illness, and sometimes death. Understanding their cause and progression in older horses is crucial to finding effective treatments and prevention strategies.

Degenerative Valve Disease

  • Degenerative valve disease is common in older horses. It involves a gradual decrease in the function of the heart’s valves, causing them to leak or stiffen. This ultimately affects the horse’s ability to pump blood effectively.
  • The paper explores the causes, symptoms, and potential treatment of degenerative valve disease in geriatric horses.

Aortocardiac Fistula

  • Aortocardiac fistula is another disease affecting older horses. It is a cardiovascular condition where an abnormal connection forms between the aorta and other areas of the heart.
  • This abnormal connection can cause a variety of health problems such as blood over-circulation or under-circulation in certain areas of the horse’s body.
  • This section of the paper covers the causes, symptoms, and possible treatments for aortocardiac fistula in older horses.

Congestive Heart Failure

  • Congestive heart failure often occurs in geriatric horses and involves the heart’s inability to pump enough blood to sustain the body’s needs.
  • It can result from various issues like high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, and heart valve issues. The study explores these causes and how they could be treated or managed in older horses.

Excluded Cardiac Diseases

  • The research does not focus on cardiac conditions such as bacterial endocarditis (an infection of the inner layer of the heart), pericarditis (inflammation of the thin sac surrounding the heart), and arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), as they are prevalent in horses of all ages. The focus of this paper is primarily on conditions that disproportionately affect geriatric horses.
