Cardiovascular effects and fatalities associated with intravenous administration of doxycycline to horses and ponies.

Abstract: Intravenous use of doxycycline in horses is associated with deleterious side effects on the cardiovascular system which may result in fatalities. At dosages and infusion rates used in these studies, supraventricular tachycardia, systemic arterial hypertension, clinical signs of discomfort, collapse and death were observed. Results of the present study suggest that the intravenous use of doxycycline should be avoided in horses.

This research article discusses the harmful cardiovascular effects and potential fatalities caused by the intravenous use of the antibiotic doxycycline in horses and ponies.

Introduction to Research

  • The paper explores the adverse side effects on the cardiovascular system observed in horses and ponies upon intravenous administration of doxycycline, an antibiotic commonly used in veterinary medicine.
  • The research aims to provide a clear understanding of the potential dangers and risks associated with this treatment method, considering the welfare of the animals and providing insight for safer applications of medication.

Methodology

  • The study made use of certain dosages and infusion rates of doxycycline to evaluate their effects on the subjects.
  • Observations during the study were made, with an emphasis on systemic arterial hypertension, supraventricular tachycardia (a type of abnormal heart rhythm), visible signs of discomfort, the possibility of collapse, and finally death.

Findings and Results

  • The research confirms a direct association between the intravenous administration of doxycycline and harmful cardiovascular effects.
  • These effects included the observed supraventricular tachycardia, systematic arterial hypertension, evident discomfort and even incidences of collapse in horses.
  • In some extreme cases, the side effects of this treatment led to the fatality of the subjects.

Conclusion

  • Based on the deleterious effects discovered in the study, the research recommends against the intravenous use of doxycycline in horses and ponies.
  • This conclusion is made with the ultimate goal of ensuring the health and safety of these animals in veterinary practices.
