Ciliated protozoa in the colonic wall of horses.
Abstract: Ciliated protozoa of several morphological types were found in the colonic tissue of 8 horses, mostly immature Standardbreds. Most of the protozoa observed appeared similar to those normally found as commensals in the equine large intestinal lumen. In all cases, organisms were located in the lamina propria; organisms were also found in the submucosa of 2 horses. The association of colonic disease with the presence of intramural ciliates was unclear.

This study explores the presence of various types of ciliated protozoa, which are typically found in the large intestine, in the colonic tissue of primarily young Standardbred horses. The presence of protozoa in the colonic tissue rather than intestinal lumen is unusual, and the relationship between this finding and colonic disease remains unclear.
Research Aim and Methodology
- The aim of this research was to study the presence of ciliated protozoa in the colonic tissue of horses.
- 8 mostly immature Standardbred horses were examined for this study.
- Colonic tissue from the horses was studied to determine the presence and morphology of ciliated protozoa.
Results and Observations
- Several types of ciliated protozoa were identified in the colonic tissues of the horses. Most of these were similar to those normally found within the intestinal lumen of horses.
- All the studied cases showed these organisms in the lamina propria, which is a thin layer of connective tissue that forms part of the mucous membrane lining various organs.
- In two horses, organisms were also discovered in the submucosa, the tissue underneath the mucosa, further away from the intestinal lumen. This is a surprising finding as ciliated protozoa are not typically found in such locations within the equine body.
Implications and Unknowns
- This research contributes to the field of veterinary science by providing information about the presence of ciliated protozoa in unusual locations within the equine body.
- The relationship between the presence of intramural ciliates within the horse’s colonic tissue and any form of colonic disease remains unclear. Further research needs to be conducted to determine whether there is a causal relationship between the two.
