Colic in a mare caused by a colonic neurofibroma.

Abstract: A 16 year old Thoroughbred mare was presented to the Ontario Veterinary College because of an acute episode of colic. An exploratory laparotomy was performed and a neurofibroma was identified and successfully removed from the small colon. The clinical and pathological features of this case are discussed.

This research article explores the case of a 16-year-old Thoroughbred mare that presented with colic that was eventually attributed to a neurofibroma, a type of tumour, in the small colon. The mare was successfully treated via exploratory laparotomy and removal of the tumour.

Case Presentation and Background

  • The researchers present the case of a 16-year old Thoroughbred mare, which was brought to the Ontario Veterinary College due to an acute case of colic.
  • Colic in horses is a common digestive disorder chargeable for severe abdominal discomfort and distress. It poses a significant health challenge and often demands urgent veterinary intervention.
  • Various factors may cause colic, such pollution, feeding practices, parasites, as well as anomalies like tumours, as in this case.

Surgical Intervention and Diagnosis

  • An exploratory laparotomy, a surgical procedure used to examine the abdominal organs, was performed on the mare.
  • During the operation, a neurofibroma was found in the mare’s small colon. A neurofibroma is a benign tumour that forms in the nervous tissue. Although benign, these tumours may lead to severe symptoms, such as colic in this instance, because of their location or size.
  • The researchers were able to successfully remove the neurofibroma. This eradicated the cause of the horse’s colic, offering the prospect for an improved quality of life.

Discussion of Clinical and Pathological Features

  • The study also delves into a discussion about the clinical and pathological features of the case.
  • Such information is crucial as it not only contributes to the broader understanding of equine health and disease but can also help guide treatment and intervention strategies going forward.
