Congenital diaphragmatic eventration in a stillborn foal.
Abstract: A stillborn full term foal was presented at necropsy. The dilated duodenum and the dorsal and ventral left colon and cecum extended into the thoracic cavity and were encased by a thin transparent membrane originating from the diaphragm. The congenital condition was diagnosed as a developmental anomaly with diaphragmatic eventration. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of diaphragmatic eventration in a Thoroughbred stillborn foal.

This research is centered around a case of a full-term stillborn foal that presented developmental anomalies due to diaphragmatic eventration – a congenital condition where the diaphragm is dilated. This is believed to be the first known case of its kind in a Thoroughbred stillborn foal.
Introduction
- The research was initiated after a full-term stillborn foal was brought in for a post-mortem examination (necropsy). The foal had a congenital condition which is highly unusual, especially for this breed thus prompting further investigation.
- This anomaly, known as diaphragmatic eventration, is a state where there is a significant protrusion or widening of the diaphragm, which is the muscle that separates the chest and the abdomen. In this case, it led to the duodenum, the first section of the small intestine, as well as the left colon and the cecum (first part of the large intestine) extending into the chest cavity.
- All the mentioned parts were covered by a thin, transparent membrane originating from the diaphragm itself which was a remarkable part of the noted deformity.
Diagnosis and Findings
- The complex condition was diagnosed as a developmental anomaly with diaphragmatic eventration. This majorly implies that the condition is believed to have arisen during the development of the foal in the womb.
- It also indicates that the condition was not due to any external factors or diseases, but was an inherent defect that happened during the foetus development.
- The convoluted condition likely hampered the natural development and functions of the organs involved, possibly leading to the foal’s stillbirth.
Significance
- The researchers highlighted that to their knowledge, this is the first reported case of a Thoroughbred stillborn foal suffering from a diaphragmatic eventration, adding a unique degree to this situation.
- This study, therefore, represents a critical step forward in understanding the nature and possible causes of diaphragmatic eventration in foals, improving veterinary knowledge and potentially helping with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of such cases in the future.
