Contrast radiography of equine joints, tendon sheaths, and draining tracts.
Abstract: Arthrography, tenography, and fistulography (or sinography) can provide additional information about the soft-tissue components of joints, tendon sheaths, and draining tracts, respectively. Arthrography is a valuable aid in the diagnosis of synovial masses, such as villonodular synovitis, and osteochondrosis. Tenography is particularly useful in evaluating chronic tendon sheath distention. Fistulography is an effective means of identifying acute traumatic damage to synovial structures and determining the cause and extent of draining tracts.

This research focuses on the use of contrast radiography in identifying and diagnosing issues in equine joints, tendon sheaths, and draining tracts. The techniques discussed in the paper are arthrography, tenography, and fistulography which provide detailed information about the soft tissue components of these areas in horses.
Arthrography
- The study describes arthrography as a significant tool in diagnosing problems associated with equine joints. It provides an in-depth view of the soft-tissue structures of the joints.
- An essential aspect of this technique is that it helps in the identification of synovial masses. Synovial masses refer to noncancerous conditions that manifest as a result of abnormal tissue growth within the joint. Specifically, it is instrumental in diagnosing conditions such as villonodular synovitis, a condition characterized by synovial joint swelling due to the growth of nodular masses.
- Arthrography is also efficient in diagnosing osteochondrosis, a joint disorder in horses that results from disturbances in endochondral ossification during the rapid growth phase in the animal’s early years.
Tenography
- Tenography is another radiographic technique covered in this research. It focuses on providing detailed imaging of the tendon sheaths in horses.
- The primary use of this procedure is to assess chronic tendon sheath distention. Distension is a pathological condition where the tendon sheaths are swollen or elongated due to prolonged inflammation or fluid accumulation.
- This technique helps in visualizing abnormalities and changes in the anatomical structure of the tendon sheaths which may be leading to chronic conditions.
Fistulography
- Fistulography or sinography, as mentioned in this study, is employed to evaluate draining tracts in horses.
- It particularly helps in the identification of acute traumatic damage to synovial structures. The synovial structures refer to areas that produce synovial fluid, which lubricates and nourishes the joints. Any acute injury or damage to this structure can severely inhibit joint function.
- Moreover, fistulography is effective in determining the cause and extent of draining tracts. Draining tracts often occur due to chronic infection, injury, or a disease which may result in abnormal passages from an internal organ to the body surface.
