Determination of Positional Parameters of the Distal Phalanx Within the Hoof Capsule in Sound Colombian Paso Horses.

The research study focuses on gathering first-time knowledge about the position of the distal phalanx bone within the hoof of the Colombian Paso Horse. The analysis provided in this study can help determine the health of this specific type of horse’s hoof, which has economic and populational significance.

Objective of the Study

• The main objective of this study is to analyze and document the positional parameters of the distal phalanx bone within the hoof of the Colombian Paso Horse, which has a substantial economic impact and is expanding to other latitudes. Prior to this study, there was a lack of comprehensive written evidence about the relationship of the distal phalanx within the hoof of this type of horse.

Methodology of the Study

• A latero-medial radiographic imaging technique was employed to analyze the hoof of each horse. The sample size consisted of 45 horses, aged between 3 and 5 years.
• These horses were further divided into groups as per the gaits determined by FEDEQUINAS, the Colombian national federation for equine sports.
• In each hoof, three angles and three distances were measured. Further, the dorsal wall thickness was examined both proximally and distally, while the sole-depth was recorded dorsally and palmarly/plantarly.

Findings of the Study

• The study found moderate to strong positive correlations between the dorsal wall thickness proximally and distally, as well as between sole depth dorsally and palmarly/plantarly, in both front and hind feet.
• The palmar/plantar angle of the distal phalanx (PA) and the sole depth showed that the phalanx of the hind feet is generally flatter compared to the front feet.
• The results of this study reveal distinct characteristics in the positional parameters of the distal phalanx within the hoof of the Colombian Paso Horse, compared to other horse breeds.

Implication of the Study

• The information generated from this study serves as critical data for veterinarians and farriers working with Colombian Paso Horses. They can use this knowledge to better diagnose, treat, and possibly prevent hoof-related ailments in these horses.
