Diseases of the kidneys.
Abstract: Ultrasound examination offers important diagnostic and prognostic information in renal disease of the horse. Differentiation between acute nephrosis and chronic renal disease can usually be made because of the advanced degree of morphologic change usually prevalent in chronic conditions. Dilatations of the recesses and pelvis (hydronephrosis) as well as the relative thickness of the renal cortex and medulla are readily determined. Mineral densities (calculi) are recognizable by their characteristic acoustic shadowing.

The research focuses on the use of ultrasound examination as a diagnostic and prognostic tool in identifying and differentiating between acute nephrosis and chronic renal disease in horses.
Ultrasound Examination and Its Application
- The study magnifies the importance of ultrasound examination in ascertaining useful diagnostic and prognostic data in cases of renal diseases in horses. The process of ultrasound makes use of sound waves to produce images of structures within the body, providing a non-invasive way to observe the internal condition of the kidneys.
Differentiating Acute Nephrosis from Chronic Renal Disease
- Acute nephrosis and chronic renal disease, although similar in some aspects, can usually be differentiated by looking at the morphologic changes that occur in the kidneys. In general, more severe morphological changes are indicative of chronic conditions, helping practitioners distinguish between these two types of renal diseases.
- Acute nephrosis refers to a sudden inflammation of the kidneys, typically caused by toxins or infections, while chronic renal disease may evolve for several months or years, usually due to long-standing health issues such as hypertension or diabetes.
Identifying Specific Kidney Conditions
- Hydronephrosis, the dilation or enlargement of the renal pelvis and recesses usually due to obstruction of normal urine outflow, can also be detected through ultrasound. This condition often results in painful symptoms and if left untreated, could damage the kidneys over time.
- The difference in thickness between the renal cortex and medulla – the two main functional sections of the kidney – can also provide significant information about the state of renal health.
- Mineral densities or kidney stones (medically known as renal calculi) can also be recognised through ultrasound. These are hard deposits formed from minerals and salts that can build up inside the kidneys. These can often cause considerable pain and may lead to other kidney problems if not properly addressed.
