[Doping problems in horse sports–pharmacokinetics of selected antiphlogistics/analgesics relevant to doping].
Abstract: Drug treatment of horses which are used in horse-racing is restricted by the regulations of the anti-doping control. Veterinarians and anti-doping control commissions are faced with the problems resulting from the discrepancy between the demand "no drugs in blood/urine of horses at the time of competition" and the need for treatment. The pharmacokinetic data of important antiphlogistics/analgetics (NSAID) for horses given in this article shall facilitate the decision of the veterinarians and commissions whether a horse having been treated with NSAID may participate in a competition or not. Further a new concept of anti-doping regulation of therapeutic substances is presented for discussion.

The research article discusses the challenges veterinarians face in balancing the need for anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving drugs treatment in racing horses versus the strict regulations set against doping in horse sports. It provides pharmacokinetic data of these drugs to aid decisions on whether a treated horse can participate in a competition. The paper also proposes a new concept for anti-doping regulation of therapeutic substances.
Pharmacokinetic Data and Doping Regulation
- The article delves into the complex issue of treating racing horses with necessary antiphlogistics (anti-inflammatory drugs) and analgesics (pain relievers). These substances, categorized under non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), are essential in treating horses but pose a problem because of the strict anti-doping regulations in horse sports.
- Given that the pressure exists to ensure “no drugs in blood/urine of horses at the time of competition,” veterinarians and anti-doping control commissions face significant challenges. They must ensure the welfare of the horse through essential treatments, while simultaneously maintaining the integrity of the horse sports by complying with the stringent anti-doping rules.
- In addressing these challenges, the research paper provides pharmacokinetic data, which is the study of how an organism affects a drug. This data pertains specifically to the set of important NSAID for horses and is presented to help veterinarians and commissions in making informed decisions. Knowing how long it takes for a drug to be absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and eliminated from a horse’s system can guide whether a horse treated with NSAIDs can enter a competition or not, remaining within the anti-doping regulations.
Presentation of a New Anti-Doping Regulation Concept
- The research paper not only informs the current problematic scenario but also proposes a new concept for the regulation of therapeutic substances in horse sports to stimulate discussion.
- Although the paper does not detail this new concept, its presentation serves as a platform to discuss more effective and fair strategies for anti-doping control. It opens the door to refining the existing guidelines, potentially balancing the need for necessary horse treatments with maintaining the integrity of competitive horse sports.
