Electrocardiographic and Echocardiographic Parameters in Pega Breed Donkeys: A Descriptive Study.
Abstract: Clinical, electrocardiographic and echocardiographic parameters in Pega donkeys are scarce in the literature; hence, this study was performed to describe the echocardiographic and electrocardiographic measurements in Pega breed donkeys. The objectives of this study were to describe and illustrate the clinical, electrocardiographic, and echocardiographic parameters in Pega donkeys used for reproduction. Fifty Pega breed donkeys were evaluated, with an average age of 3.4 years and with 20 males and 30 females. In each animal, the electrocardiographic examination at rest was performed using the TEB computerized system, and the echocardiographic examination was performed using an ultrasound device with a Doppler function multifrequency sectorial transducer in 2D mode (Sonosite M turbo). Standardizing the electrocardiographic and echocardiographic parameters for the Pega breed donkey can contribute to future assessments regarding possible changes that excessive effort can promote in these parameters to a management engrossed on animal welfare.

This research aimed to establish standard electrocardiographic and echocardiographic measurements for Pega donkeys, with the goal of understanding their heart health better and identifying potential problems in the future.
Overview of the Research
- The study was conducted to fill a gap in the existing scientific literature. There was a lack of information about electrocardiographic and echocardiographic parameters—which are important for understanding heart health—in Pega breed donkeys.
- Fifty Pega donkeys were used for the study. These donkeys were selected because they are commonly used for reproduction. An almost equal number of male (20) and female (30) donkeys were included, and they had an average age of 3.4 years.
- The researchers planned to use the data obtained from this study as a basis for future research, which will aim to understand how excessive effort may impact these donkeys’ heart parameters and overall welfare.
Clinical Evaluation
- Each donkey underwent a clinical examination as part of the study. This involved an assessment of the donkey’s general health, as well as a review of any potential heart-related issues. The donkeys’ resting electrocardiographic and echocardiographic parameters were measured and documented. These data would provide a baseline measure of each donkey’s heart health.
Electrocardiographic Examination
- The electrocardiographic examination was performed using a TEB computerized system, which is designed to monitor and record the electrical activity of the heart. This ensures accurate and reliable data collection, thereby enabling the researchers to make precise comparisons between individuals.
Echocardiographic Examination
- The researchers performed the echocardiographic examination using an ultrasound device equipped with a Doppler function multifrequency sectorial transducer in 2D mode (Sonosite M turbo). This advanced technological tool allowed for a detailed examination of the donkeys’ heart structure and function, providing comprehensive data about its physiology.
The Significance of the Study
- At the conclusion of the study, the researchers proposed that creating a standard for the electrocardiographic and echocardiographic parameters for the Pega breed donkey may be beneficial for future research and assessments. This could offer valuable insights into how excessive effort affects these parameters and consequently, influence the management and welfare of the animals. Any changes in these heart parameters could be an indicator of stress or disease, allowing for earlier detection and treatment.
