Epizootic lymphangitis in horses: a review of the literature.
Abstract: Epizootic lymphangitis is a relatively common infectious disease of horses and other liquids in certain parts of the world. The infection rate varies according to the geographic area and the age of the animal. The disease is most commonly characterised by a cord-like appearance of the subcutaneous lymphatic and cutaneous pyogranulomas, the discharge from which contains spherical or pear-shaped bodies of the causal agent, Histoplasma farciminosum. Diagnosis can be made by the demonstration of typical organisms in stained smears, culture and tissue sections. Serological tests and a skin hypersensitivity test have been described. Amphotericin B is the drug of choice for the treatment of clinical cases. An attenuated vaccine and a killed formalized vaccine are available and can be used in endemic areas to control the disease.

Summary
This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.
The research article provides a comprehensive review of Epizootic lymphangitis, a common infectious disease in horses, discussing its diagnosis, effects, and treatment procedures.
Overview of Epizootic Lymphangitis
- The research begins by explaining that Epizootic lymphangitis is a prevalent infectious disease that affects horses and other equines in specific regions. Its occurrence rate varies based on geography and the animal’s age.
- The disease is primarily characterized by a distinctive cord-like appearance in the subcutaneous lymphatic system of the animals and the formation of cutaneous pyogranulomas, or pus-filled granulomas beneath the skin.
- The discharge from the pyogranulomas contains noticeable pear-shaped or spherical bodies of the causative microorganism, Histoplasma farciminosum.
Diagnosis of Epizootic Lymphangitis
- The article suggests several methods for diagnosing Epizootic lymphangitis. These include observing common microorganisms in stained smears, culture and tissue sections.
- Serological tests, which identify disease-specific antibodies in a horse’s blood, are also mentioned as a diagnostic method.
- Additionally, a skin hypersensitivity test can be performed to support the diagnosis.
Treatment and Prevention of Epizootic Lymphangitis
- Once the horse is confirmed to be suffering from Epizootic lymphangitis, the research describes Amphotericin B as the preferred pharmaceutical treatment.
- For prevention, particularly in areas where the disease is endemic, a modified-live or an inactivated vaccine is available to provide immunity against the disease
- These vaccines, if used appropriately, prove effective in controlling and managing the spread of the disease.
