Epizootic of equine influenza in 1969 in Poland.
Abstract: Epidemiological observations on the course and spread of equine influenza in Poland during the 1969 epizootic were carried out. The dynamics of the spread of the disease in the country are shown graphically by voivodship. The disease incidence and mortality rates for the entire country are also shown. The highest incidence of disease and mortality rates were found to be in November 1969. A/equi-2/Warsaw/69 was identified as the causal virus. It caused the largest epizootic in the country since 1954.

The research article reviews a major outbreak of equine influenza in Poland in 1969, using epidemiological tools to track the spread, incidence, and mortality rates of the disease. The virus responsible for the outbreak, A/equi-2/Warsaw/69, led to the largest surge in horse disease in Poland since 1954.
Research Objectives and Methods
- The major aim of this research was to understand the epidemiology – the spread, incidence, and mortality – of the equine influenza outbreak in Poland in 1969.
- The researchers tracked the dynamics of the disease’s spread across the country, documenting it graphically by voivodship – a Polish term for an administrative subdivision.
- They also recorded the disease incidence, which means the number of new cases, and mortality rates.
Results of the Study
- Based on the collected data, the study demonstrates how the disease spread over time and captures the trajectory of the outbreak.
- The highest incidence of disease and mortality rates were observed in November 1969, suggesting that this was the peak of the epizootic.
- The virus identified as the culprit behind the illness was A/equi-2/Warsaw/69.
Significance of the Findings
- This virus was responsible for the largest epizootic, or disease outbreak in animal population, in Poland since 1954, leading to widespread disease and death among horses.
- The study provides valuable insights into the escalation, spread, and impact of the disease during this period, which could be significant for understanding similar outbreaks in the future.
Implication of the Study
- The findings of the study can contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of equine influenza, including how it spreads and causes disease in horse populations.
- Such insights could be crucial for developing preventive measures and interventions to control and prevent future outbreaks of this nature.
