Equine Abdominal Surgery: Predicting and Preventing Postoperative Complications.
Abstract: Morbidity after equine abdominal surgery is common and post-operative complications can be costly to owners. The focus of this article is on intraoperative decision-making and current evidence, including surgical techniques and prognostic information that can prevent and predict complications. Emerging techniques for intra-operative monitoring and intestinal viability assessment, anastomotic techniques, body wall suturing, peritonitis treatment, and pain management are discussed.

Equine abdominal surgery often leads to complications that can be expensive and harmful, and this article reviews surgical decisions and methods to predict and prevent such postoperative issues.
Overview of Postoperative Complications in Equine Abdominal Surgery
- Morbidity following equine abdominal surgery is a frequent problem affecting recovery and survival.
- Postoperative complications lead to increased costs and emotional burden for horse owners.
Intraoperative Decision-Making and Its Importance
- Careful surgical decisions made during the operation are crucial to minimize future complications.
- Choosing appropriate surgical techniques plays a significant role in influencing postoperative outcomes.
- Knowledge of prognostic indicators helps predict the likelihood of complications, guiding treatment plans.
Current Surgical Techniques and Prognostic Information
- Techniques for assessing intestinal viability during surgery help ensure only healthy tissue is used for reconnection.
- Various anastomotic methods (joining intestinal sections) are evaluated to optimize healing and reduce leaks or strictures.
- Body wall suturing methods are discussed to prevent herniation and ensure abdominal support.
Emerging Techniques in Intra-Operative Monitoring
- New monitoring tools allow surgeons to better assess intestinal health and viability in real time.
- Technologies such as enhanced imaging and biochemical sensors help improve decision accuracy.
Postoperative Management: Peritonitis and Pain Control
- Treatment strategies for peritonitis, a common and serious complication involving abdominal infection, are reviewed.
- Effective pain management protocols reduce stress and improve healing responses in horses after surgery.
Summary
- The article combines current evidence and innovative techniques to guide surgeons in preventing and predicting complications.
- Ultimately, improved intraoperative judgment and postoperative care enhance equine patient outcomes and reduce financial burdens on owners.
