[Equine dentistry: Survey on Swiss horse owners].

Abstract: The interest in equine dentistry has significantly increased in the last 15 years. On the part of the veterinarians as well as of the horse owners there is a strong attention to the topic. The aim of the questionnaire was to investigate amongst horse owners what their level of information and preferences about dental treatment are and how they are implemented. The questionnaire was translated into the three national languages and included 20 questions about level and sources of information, frequency of treatments and the horse owner's stance over sedation of the animals. With a return rate of 45% (1'466 of 3'250 sent questionnaires) significant conclusions could be drawn. Horse owners showed a strong demand for clarification regarding tooth problems, the causes, consequences and methods of treatment. More than half of the owners considered themselves not well informed. The treating person was in 66.7% a veterinarian with a special education. Horse owners indicated that information circulated most frequently by word of mouth recommendations and they explicitly wished information from professional and reliable sources. The questionnaire provided a clear result about current equine dental treatments. We suggest that they should be performed by veterinarians only with a special education.

This research examines Swiss horse owners’ understanding and preferences related to equine dentistry. The study found that horse owners have a strong desire for more knowledge about dental problems in horses, their causes, effects, and remedy methods, with over half feeling insufficiently informed.

Research Methodology

  • The researchers created a questionnaire consisting of 20 inquiries to understand horse owners’ information level and sources, treatment frequency, and views on sedating the animals for the procedure.
  • This questionnaire, translated in the three national languages, was sent out to 3,250 potential participants.
  • The study had a good response rate, with 1,466 out of the dispatched survey forms (45%) received back for analysis.

Key Results

  • A significant need for education regarding dental problems in horses, their causes, implications, and treatment methods was expressed by the horse owners.
  • It was noted that over half of the respondents felt they were not well informed about these issues.
  • The practitioner treating the horses was a specially trained veterinarian in 66.7% of cases.
  • Owners reported acquiring information most commonly via word of mouth and showed a definite preference for information from professional, reliable sources.

Recommendations from the Study

  • The research suggests that equine dental treatments should ideally be carried out solely by veterinarians who have undergone special training.
  • Additionally, the information circulation method needs improvement. Evidence from the survey corroborates the importance of associations and veterinary health professionals providing reliable and professional information to horse owners.

Overall, the study led to a better understanding of current equine dental treatments and the communicational gaps in this area that need to be addressed.
