Equine Nuclear Medicine in 2024: Use and Value of Scintigraphy and PET in Equine Lameness Diagnosis.

Abstract: Scintigraphy and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) are both nuclear medicine imaging techniques, providing functional information of the imaged areas. Scintigraphy is a two-dimensional projected imaging technique that was introduced in equine imaging in the late 1970s. Scintigraphy allows imaging of large body parts and can cover multiple areas, remaining the only technique commonly used in horses for whole body imaging. PET is a cross-sectional imaging technique, first used in horses in 2015, allowing higher resolution three-dimensional functional imaging of the equine distal limb. This manuscript will cover current use and values of these two modalities in equine lameness diagnosis.

This article discusses the use and value of Scintigraphy and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) in diagnosing lameness in horses. The manuscript compares these two imaging techniques and reveals how they have contributed to the advancements in equine imaging since their adoption.

Scintigraphy and PET: Introduction and Differences

  • The article introduces Scintigraphy and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) as nuclear medicine imaging methods that offer functional information about the imaged part of the horse’s body. While both techniques are used for imaging, they provide different types of data and have different applications.
  • Scintigraphy is established as an older imaging technique, adopted by equine imaging in the late 1970s. It generates two-dimensional images and allows for coverage of large parts, making it the only widespread technique used for the complete body imaging of horses.
  • PET, on the other hand, has only been in use since 2015. It provides higher resolution imaging, earning it preferential use for three-dimensional functional imaging of a horse’s distal limb. This advanced resolution gives PET an edge in detailed imaging.

Application in Equine Lameness Diagnosis

  • These imaging techniques are crucial in the sphere of equine lameness diagnosis. Lameness, a common issue in horses, refers to the difficulty in movement or changes in gait due to pain or discomfort.
  • Scintigraphy, given its ability to cover large body parts, is instrumental when the lameness source isn’t immediately apparent and might reside in areas not easily accessible or visible for other imaging techniques.
  • PET, capable of generating detailed three-dimensional images, is particularly useful in the diagnosis of lameness in the distal limbs of horses. It provides highly detailed images that can enhance the precision of the diagnosis.

Significance of the Study

  • This study seeks to reveal the critical role that Scintigraphy and PET play in the diagnosis of equine lameness. It accomplishes this by illuminating the unique capabilities of each imaging technique, and explaining their applications in diagnosis.
  • The goal is to appreciate these imaging techniques and their contributions to advancements in equine health over the years. Acknowledging these techniques’ respective capabilities could stimulate their improved use and spur further innovation in the field.
