Equine Pulmonary Agenesis and Hypoplasia Associated With Diaphragmatic Herniation.
Abstract: Pulmonary malformations are rare equine congenital anomalies. Over a 3-year timeframe, three cases of left sided pulmonary agenesis were diagnosed in perinatal foals. All three cases were associated with concurrent ipsilateral diaphragmatic herniation and hypoplasia of the right lung lobe. All three foals died immediately following parturition due to perinatal asphyxia associated with the congenital malformations. To the author's knowledge, this is the first report of pulmonary agenesis in the horse.

This research article investigates a rare case series of newborn horses identified with pulmonary agenesis, a congenital abnormality. All three cases were found to have additional congenital complications, which led to immediate death post-birth.
Introduction and Background
- The study focuses on the rare congenital anomalies in horses known as pulmonary agenesis – the absence of one or both lungs at birth.
- Over a three-year timespan, the researchers identified three instances of this condition in newborn foals.
Findings
- Observations showed that all three foals suffered from left-sided pulmonary agenesis. This indicates the complete absence or underdevelopment of the left lung.
- Each case showed additional complications with an accompanying ipsilateral diaphragmatic herniation, suggesting that the diaphragm on the same side as the pulmonary agenesis was displaced or protruding.
- Further compounding these congenital anomalies, right lung lobe hypoplasia was also observed in all cases. Hypoplasia refers to the underdevelopment or incomplete development of a tissue or organ; here, the right lung lobe of the affected foals.
Conclusion and Impact of the Study
- These congenital abnormalities unfortunately resulted in the immediate death of all three foals after birth due to perinatal asphyxia, a condition where the fetus or newborn suffers from severe oxygen deprivation.
- This study represents the first report, to the authors’ knowledge, of such a complex mix of pulmonary congenital malformations in horses, highlighting the severity and fatal consequences of these conditions.
Implications and Significance
- By identifying and studying these rare anomalies, researchers can hope to gain more insight into these conditions and their causes, potentially paving the way for pre- or post-natal treatment or prevention strategies in the future.
- The findings ultimately contribute to broader veterinary science and animal welfare, helping to inform professionals of potential complications and offering avenues for further research.
