Equine sarcoidosis.
Abstract: Equine sarcoidosis seems to be an emerging problem. As more horses are referred for dermatologic disease, equine sarcoidosis should be considered in any case of exfoliative and/or nodular skin disease with or without systemic involvement, including generalized granulomatous disease affecting most internal organs. Multiple breeds are affected with mares being predisposed. Affected horses are typically 3 years or older. The prognosis for generalized granulomatous disease is generally poor, whereas the prognosis for the localized cutaneous form is favorable but may require lifelong treatment.

This research article investigates equine sarcoidosis, a skin disease in horses which is becoming increasingly prevalent. The study notes that while localized forms of the disease have a better outlook and often require lifelong treatment, generalized forms affecting internal organs typically have a poor prognosis.
Understanding Equine Sarcoidosis
- The research paper focuses on equine sarcoidosis, a worsening health concern in horses. This skin condition manifests itself in two forms, exfoliative and/or nodular skin disease. These can affect a single area (localized) or multiple parts of the body, including internal organs (generalized).
- Equine sarcoidosis could turn into a granulomatous disease when it spreads to more internal organs. In the context of this disease, granulomatous refers to inflammatory nodules composed of modified “macrophage” immune cells.
Demographics and Prognosis
- The study mentions that this disease impacts multiple breeds, and mares (adult female horses) are particularly susceptible. The typical age of onset is around 3 years or older for most horses.
- In terms of prognosis, the research indicates a poor outlook for individuals dealing with generalized granulomatous disease, presumably due to the extensive internal organ involvement. On the other hand, horses diagnosed with the localized cutaneous (skin-related) form of the disease have a more favourable prognosis. However, they might require lifelong treatment to manage the condition.
Importance of the Study
- This research aims to raise awareness about the prevalence of equine sarcoidosis, particularly as more horses are being referred for dermatologic diseases. The research emphasizes the importance of considering this condition in all cases of skin disease in horses, particularly those with systemic implications.
- By doing so, the research article aims to improve the early detection and management of this disease, thereby improving the wellbeing of the affected horses and mitigating the potential impact of the condition on the equine industry.
