Equine water treadmill.
Abstract: To describe the application of water treadmill exercise for equine fitness and/or rehabilitation in a scientific and clinically reasonable manner. Unassigned: Horses owned by Spy Coast Farm were used for video content. Unassigned: A literature review was performed and compiled in this brief video to provide veterinarians with a comprehensive, evidence-based guide for implementing water treadmill exercise within fitness and rehabilitation programs. Unassigned: Equine water treadmill exercise is an aerobic modality that increases distal limb flexion and range of motion, with no reported adverse effects. It is associated with increased stride length and decreased stride frequency. Water treadmill exercise should not be used as a sole rehabilitation modality; instead, it is most effective when incorporated into a comprehensive rehabilitation plan. Unassigned: Kinematic data, clinical findings, and controlled studies offer the framework for the development of individualized water treadmill programs tailored to a horse's condition. Oversight by trained personnel or a veterinarian is essential, as program adjustments are necessary over the course of rehabilitation. In the future, multicenter prospective clinical trials using standardized protocols would be helpful to develop recommendations for specific injuries.

Overview
- This research summarizes the use of water treadmill exercise for horses, focusing on its benefits for fitness and rehabilitation.
- The study compiles scientific data and clinical insights to guide veterinarians in integrating water treadmill programs safely and effectively.
Introduction to Equine Water Treadmill Exercise
- Water treadmill exercise involves swimming-like aerobic movement for horses walking on a treadmill submerged in water.
- It is designed to enhance limb flexibility and range of motion without causing negative side effects.
- Exercise is aerobic in nature, meaning it improves cardiovascular fitness through continuous movement.
Key Benefits and Effects
- Increases distal limb flexion, improving joint mobility and muscle flexibility.
- Enhances range of motion, which can aid recovery from injuries and improve athletic performance.
- Leads to increased stride length, allowing horses to take longer steps.
- Decreases stride frequency, implying fewer but more efficient movements during exercise.
- Has no reported adverse effects, making it a safe modality when properly supervised.
Usage Recommendations
- Water treadmill exercise should not be the only rehabilitation strategy; it works best as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
- Programs should be tailored to the specific needs and physical condition of the horse.
- Supervision by trained personnel or a veterinarian is necessary to monitor progress and make adjustments.
- Adjustments are particularly important during the rehabilitation process to respond to changes in the horse’s condition.
Scientific Basis and Data Supporting Use
- Kinematic data provide insights on how water treadmill exercise affects horse movement mechanics.
- Clinical findings from cases and controlled studies guide development of individualized exercise programs.
- Evidence-based recommendations support veterinary decision-making in fitness and rehabilitation contexts.
Future Directions and Research Needs
- Calls for multicenter prospective clinical trials using standardized protocols to strengthen evidence quality.
- Such studies would help establish clear guidelines for specific injuries and conditions.
- Standardized research could improve program consistency and efficacy across veterinary practices.
