Estimation of genetic parameters for temperament in Jeju crossbred horses.
- Journal Article
Summary
This research paper investigates the genetic influences on the temperament of Jeju crossbred horses, discovering moderate heritability and a high correlation between different temperament aspects.
Research Objective
The study seeks to assess the genetic traits that determine temperament in Jeju crossbred horses (a breed-cross of Jeju and Thoroughbred horses). The researchers used records from temperament tests with the objective of applying the findings to enhance the temperament of these horses in the future.
Methods
- The researchers used 205 Jeju crossbred horses (101 females, 104 males) born between 2010 and 2015 for the study.
- The horses were trained and tamed according to the Manual for Horse Taming and Evaluation for Therapeutic Riding Horses.
- The horses’ temperaments were evaluated between 15 and 18 months of age, in categories including gentleness, patience, aggressiveness, sensitivity, and friendliness.
- Scoring for each category was done on a five-point linear scale.
- To analyze the genetic parameters for these test categories, the researchers used a multi-trait mixed model with repeated records.
- Data was processed through the ASReml software program.
Results
- The heritability (the proportion of observed differences on a phenotypic trait among individuals of a population that are due to genetic differences) of gentleness, patience, aggressiveness, sensitivity, and friendliness ranged from 0.08 to 0.53.
- The standard errors of estimated heritability ranged from 0.13 to 0.17.
- There was a high genetic correlation (measure of the amount of statistical association between the genetic liabilities for two traits or conditions) among the temperament categories, ranging from 0.96 to 0.99.
- Similarly, the study found high repeatability (degree of consistency of a measure) in the temperament categories, ranging from 0.70 to 0.73.
Conclusion
Primarily, the research found that the temperament test categories possess moderate heritability and high genetic correlations among one another. However, it also indicates that further studies may be required for the practical use of these findings in programs aimed at improving the temperament of Jeju crossbred horses.
