Factors influencing antibiotic prescribing habits and use of sensitivity testing amongst veterinarians in Europe.

Abstract: The Heads of Medicines Agencies and the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe undertook a survey to gain a better insight into the decision-making process of veterinarians in Europe when deciding which antibiotics to prescribe. The survey was completed by 3004 practitioners from 25 European countries. Analysis was to the level of different types of practitioner (food producing (FP) animals, companion animals, equines) and country for Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden and the UK. Responses indicate no single information source is universally considered critical, though training, published literature and experience were the most important. Factors recorded which most strongly influenced prescribing behaviour were sensitivity tests, own experience, the risk for antibiotic resistance developing and ease of administration. Most practitioners usually take into account responsible use warnings. Antibiotic sensitivity testing is usually performed where a treatment failure has occurred. Significant differences were observed in the frequency of sensitivity testing at the level of types of practitioners and country. The responses indicate a need to improve sensitivity tests and services, with the availability of rapid and cheaper testing being key factors.

Summary

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.

The article reports on a survey examining the factors that influence the choice of antibiotics prescribed by veterinarians in Europe, as well as the use of sensitivity testing.

Survey Background and Scope

  • A survey was conducted by the Heads of Medicines Agencies and the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe. The goal was to understand how veterinarians in Europe choose which antibiotics to prescribe for animals.
  • A total of 3004 veterinarians, spanning 25 European countries, participated in the survey. The analysis was further segregated based on the type of practitioner (focusing on food-producing animals, companion animals, or equines) and the country of practice (with focus on Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, and the UK).

Key Findings

  • The survey reveals no single universally critical source of information that veterinarians rely on when choosing antibiotics. Training, published literature, and personal experience emerged as the most important sources of information.
  • Several factors were identified as key influencers of antibiotic prescribing behaviour among veterinarians. They included results of sensitivity tests, personal experience, the risk of antibiotic resistance development, and the ease of administering the drug. Additionally, most of the veterinarians took into account warnings advocating on the responsible use of antibiotics.
  • Sensitivity testing, which reveals the most effective antibiotic for a particular condition, is generally conducted for cases where an initial treatment has failed.
  • There was a significant difference in the frequency of sensitivity testing done between veterinarians focusing on different animal types and across different countries.

Implications of the Research

  • The survey findings indicate a need for improvements in sensitivity tests and associated services.
  • Faster and more affordable testing has been identified as a key need by the practitioners to ensure effective treatment and to combat the rising threat of antibiotic resistance.
