Glutathione peroxidase activity in the blood of healthy horses given different selenium supplementation.
Abstract: Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) activity in the blood is correlated to the amount of selenium which was given to the horse. Currently recommended doses of selenium seem to be sufficient in order to prevent selenium deficiency. The blood GSH-px in foals reflects the amount of selenium given to the mare during pregnancy.

This research article investigates the relationship between the activity of Glutathione peroxidase (a crucial enzyme) in horse blood and the amount of selenium (a necessary dietary supplement) that is given to the animals. The findings indicate that current recommended doses of selenium appear to be sufficient for preventing selenium deficiency and that blood levels of Glutathione peroxidase in foals are impacted by the selenium administered to the mare during pregnancy.
Overview of the Study
- This research work seeks to understand the role of selenium supplementation in influencing Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) activity. GSH-px is an enzyme that is crucial for preventing oxidative damage in organisms, and its activity level can be influenced by selenium intake in the diet.
- The study is focused on horses, as it investigates how different levels of selenium supplementation can impact blood GSH-px activity in healthy horses.
Selenium and Glutathione Peroxidase Activity
- Selenium is an essential micronutrient that plays vital roles in the body, including the promotion of growth, infertility prevention, and protection against oxidative stress and certain types of cancer.
- One significant role of selenium is its influence on the activity of Glutathione peroxidase, a selenium-containing enzyme. Glutathione peroxidase helps protect cells and tissues from oxidative damage by breaking down potentially harmful hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen.
- Therefore, the activity of Glutathione peroxidase in the blood can be directly associated with the amount of selenium provided in the diet.
Findings of the Research
- The study suggests that the currently recommended doses of selenium for horses are sufficient to prevent selenium deficiency. A deficiency in selenium can lead to detrimental health issues, including White Muscle Disease and poor growth.
- The research also found that the blood GSH-px activity in foals, or young horses, does reflect the amount of selenium that was given to the mother horse during pregnancy. This finding is significant because it underscores the importance of providing adequate selenium supplementation to pregnant mares to ensure the health of their foals.
