Identification of an ossicle associated with the palmar aspect of the carpus in the horse.
Abstract: An ossicle associated with the palmar aspect of the carpus is described in five horses. The size of the ossicle varied from 3 x 4 mm to approximately 12 x 10 mm. The ossicles were located at the junction of the proximal and distal rows of carpal bones, between the palmaromedial aspect of the fourth carpal bone and the ulnar carpal bone. In 3 horses they were bilateral, in one horse unilateral, and only one limb was examined in the remaining horse. In all horses it was an incidental finding and not regarded to be a pathologic entity.

This research article discusses the discovery of a small bone, referred to as an ossicle, in the wrist (carpal) area of five horses. This bone, varying in size, was not associated with any known diseases and was found randomly in most cases.
Background to the Study
- The researchers studied the carpal (wrist) area of horses to identify any unusual presence. This led them to discover the unexpected presence of a small bone, known as an ossicle, in five different horses.
- The ossicle discovery was incidental; meaning it was discovered accidentally during the examination for another purpose, and not as a result of a targeted investigation for this specific bone.
Description of Ossicle
- The ossicles varied in size among the horses, ranging from approximately 3 millimeters by 4 millimeters to 12 millimeters by 10 millimeters. This indicates that the ossicle does not have a uniform size and can vary from horse to horse.
- The ossicles were located at the junction of the proximal and distal rows of carpal bones. This is the area of the wrist where the two sets of bone rows meet, between the inside aspect of the fourth carpal bone and the bone of the ulna (one of the main bones of the forearm) in the wrist.
Study Findings
- In terms of distribution, in three of the horses the ossicles were found on both sides of the wrist (bilateral), in one horse it was found only on one side (unilateral), and in one horse researchers only examined one limb.
- Despite the irregular presence of this ossicle, it was not considered to be a symptom or cause of a pathological condition. In other words, the researchers did not regard the presence of the ossicle as an indicator of disease or an abnormal health state in these horses.
