Integrative Approach to Neck Pain and Dysfunction.

Abstract: Equine cervical pain and dysfunction may be difficult to diagnose and effectively manage. Understanding techniques in integrative medicine often allows the practitioner to observe and palpate areas of pain and dysfunction in the horse being evaluated in ways often not taught or used in conventional medicine. There are many integrative therapies that also may be utilized to more effectively manage these horses, resulting in a more comfortable and functional horse.

The research article discusses the application of an integrative approach in diagnosing and managing pain and dysfunction in the neck region of horses, using techniques not typically used in traditional veterinary medicine.

Objective Overview

This study was undertaken to understand and implement an integrative approach in the diagnosis and management of cervical (neck) pain and dysfunction in horses, using both observation and palpation as evaluation methods, and applying various integrative therapies.

Understanding the Problem

  • Equine cervical pain and dysfunction is often hard to diagnose and treat, posing a significant challenge to both conventional and equine veterinarians.
  • The study states that this difficulty arises from the traditional methods of diagnosis and treatment not being comprehensive or effective enough.

Applying Integrative Medicine

  • The researchers propose using integrative medicine, which blends conventional and alternative therapies for managing pain and dysfunction.
  • This approach enables the practitioner to observe and palpate (touch) pain areas and dysfunctional spots in the horse, providing a deeper understanding of the issue beyond what conventional methods can offer.

Merits of Integrative Therapies

  • The paper discusses the application of numerous integrative therapies for managing equine cervical pain.
  • The goal of these therapies is to make the horses more comfortable and functional, improving their overall health and well-being.

Conclusion

The research paper suggests that an integrative approach to managing equine cervical pain and dysfunction can lead to more effective treatment outcomes. This approach requires the vet practitioner to use unconventional observation and palpation techniques, and employ integrative therapies. The ultimate goal is to enhance the comfort and functionality of the horses, promoting their overall health.
