Limb fractures more common in French than British jockeys.
Abstract: French jockeys suffer more severe injuries when they fall off their horses than their British counterparts. While it has been shown that jockeys suffer high rates of fatal and non-fatal injuries, little is known about differences in injury rates between countries. To investigate this, researchers from Australia, France and the UK used prospectively collected data on the rates of fatal and non-fatal injuries in flat and jump jockeys in France and compared them with data from the UK.

This research article explores and compares the injury rates of French and British jockeys, and it was found that French jockeys are more prone to severe injuries during horse riding.
Research Objective
The aim of the study was to investigate potential differences in injury rates between French and British jockeys. The researchers were interested in understanding if jockeys from different countries suffer varied rates and severity of injuries, and if so, what might be the factors contributing to these differences. The consideration was both for fatal and non-fatal accidents.
Data Collection
- To achieve this objective, the research team gathered and analyzed data prospectively from UK and France. The data pertained to injury incidents involving both flat and jump jockeys.
- The researchers collected data in a forward-looking manner, which means they were compiling and analyzing data as it was being made available, lending a current and accurate insight into the situation.
Results and Conclusion
- Based on the data analysis, researchers found that French jockeys, when compared to their British counterparts, were at a higher risk of sustaining severe injuries when they fall off their horses.
- Though the rates of injuries sustained by jockeys in the profession are already known to be high globally, this study underlined significant inter-country differences.
Implications and Future Research
- These findings have crucial implications for determining country-specific safety protocols and standards for jockeys. They can influence both clinical and policy decision-making in France and the UK relating to jockey health and safety.
- Identifying such injury rate discrepancies prompt further research on factors leading to the high injury rate among French jockeys. It could be due to differences in training practices, course conditions, healthcare facilities, or any other elements specific to France.
