Lower airway diseases of the adult horse.
Abstract: Lower airway problems of the adult horse are commonly encountered by the practitioner. Particularly susceptible populations include horses transported for any significant distance and young horses grouped together for training and/or competition. This article presents some of the commonly encountered problems of this patient population, including bacterial pneumonia/pleuropneumonia and influenza, and some uncommon ones, including pulmonary edema, pneumothorax/hemothorax, and acuterespiratory distress syndrome. Information is presented that should allow the practitioner to diagnose these problems accurately and initiate rational treatment plans.

Lower Airway Diseases in Adult Horses
- The study is an exploration of the lower airway diseases common among adult horses.
- While these conditions can occur in any adult horse, the article highlights particular cohorts that are more susceptible to these ailments. These include horses that are frequently transported for considerable distances and young horses that are grouped for training and competition purposes.
- The research not only elucidates the common ailments in this patient group, such as bacterial pneumonia/pleuropneumonia and influenza, but it also brings some uncommon disorders to light, such as pulmonary edema, pneumothorax/hemothorax, and acute respiratory distress syndrome.
Diagnosis and Treatment of These Diseases
- One of the primary objectives of this research is to enable practitioners to accurately diagnose these lower airway diseases in adult horses.
- It provides key information which when utilized appropriately, can boost accurate diagnosis.
- Once an accurate diagnosis is achieved, the article further offers insight on creating rational and effective treatment plans.
- The treatment protocols suggested are therefore based on definitive diagnoses, leading to optimal health outcomes for the horses.
